Rings and Bases

I am trying to decide what kind of rings and bases to buy for my new gun. The scope is a leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10 and the gun is a browning .300 remington ultra mag. I have looked at leupold mounts but I want to know what you think and if you would suggest anything differn't

MSPHUNTER,
I am in the same predicament myself. I just got a Sendero in 300 Win Mag which I am going to put on the same scope as yours. I checked into it and spoke with some friends about various mounts and bases and decided to use Leupold dual dovetail rings and bases. They appear to be a sturdy type of mount for a rifle with a some recoil and the quality is very good.

You can hardly do better than Leupold's Dual Dovetail setup. Go for it! I use 'em anytime I can, even if it's just a .223 Remington. Strongest mounts only!

Shuckin's, buy the purtiest. I've been using Weaver's stuff and the clones thereof, and have never had a problem. The Weaver bases and rings have been on my '06 for 30 years, now.

The Conetrol mounts on my .243 are a lot purtier. They work just as good, too.

I have nothing but good things to say about Leupold Dual Dovetail. Solid and reliable lockup. You can't beat the Torx screw system either. I've been told that these screws are far less likely to strip out--when tightening or removing. I have Leupold bases and rings on my Remington 700. As most here will tell you, use the lowest rings possible for your gun. I wound up having to use the Medium rings because my bolt scraped the side of the scope with the Low rings.

The installation wrench made by Leupold is handy, though not necessary. In order to prevent marring the rings, you can simply pad the inside of an adjustable wrench (with some strips of cloth or foam) and then cover the padding with duct tape. Or you can use a one-inch wooden dowel to twist the rings into place. Whatever you do, don't lock in the rings using the scope. Far too much potential for bending the scope tube.

Hey MSPHUNTER, I also have a good many Leupold Dual Dovetail mounts on my rifles. No doubt they are fine.

Before you decide though, let me recommend you look at the "Burris Signature" Rings and Bases in their Dual Dovetail style. No Lapping needed with the floating synthetic inserts. And, they get a great grip on the scope tube without maring or applying any torsional stress. I'll be switching to them on ALL new rifles I buy.

Good hunting and clean 1-shot kills, Hot Core

i use the signature rings that have the inserts. these give you the ability to either raise or lower your scope by using the inserts that are available. so you can zero in your scope just by changing out the inserts (iirc) they go from +&-5 to +&-20

I have two VXIII 3.5-10x40 M3s, both on Rem 700 .308s, one with Leu. MIV rings/bases and one on MIV base and Leu QRW rings. So far, I couldn't reliably say that the MKIV rings are "better" than the QRW rings, but they "appear" to be more sturdy (as you would expect).
