Rimfire/shotgun Combinations.

Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone still uses a shotgun/rimfire combination?
If so, are they still making them or is it a "dying race" of gun?

Thanks all and safe hunting.

I killed my first squirrel with a model 24e. My dad had bought it for my grandfather, and I think any grandchild that wanted to hunt with it, well Pappy would oblige. I don't know for sure where this rifle is today,,,,,but this thread brings up so many good memories from a sweeter time (early 70's). It was a .22 over a .410 guage, I gave plenty a foxsquirrel whatfor with that dude!!;)

Anyway thanks for coming!!

I've got a Savage 94F in .22 Hornet over 12Ga. It is a beast to carry at close to 10lbs when scoped. The Hornet barrel has marginal accuracy. At 100 yds using Remingon SPs I can get about a 3" group but no better. However, I consider a .22 Hornet to be a 100 yd round so I'm OK there. I bought it strictly to use when turkey hunting. Here in Fl, you can use a rifle on a turkey and sometimes it is nice to have one if the gobbler hangs up out of shotgun range. Then there is also the very real likelyhood of having a pig or coyote pop out of the woods. Having the rifle for those two is a bonus.

These are the 24 series in many combination of rifle/shotgun. These are very popular with my groups as they are a great rabbit gun, in the snow. As far as I know, they are no longer made and used ones are hard to find. They always bring more money than they are really worth but that's the game .... ;)

I have an old stevens 22/410 that I am planning to use to squirrel hunt with this fall. I have been looking for a savage model 24 with no such luck:mad:

Here in the USA, when you talk about rifle/shotgun combo guns, you are generally talking about the Savage Model 24. I think they fit into the category of "jack of all trades, master of none". Yes, they will kill a deer or a rogue duck occasionally, but no serious hunter or target shooter would use one. Stock design for rifles and shotguns are radically different so the stock on the Savage 24 really does not serve either. Accuracy is generally poor with either barrel. And they definitely get no respect. In Europe, however, combo guns are a different beast.
