Rights vs. Public Interest

"So long as a concept such as the 'public interest' (or as "social" or "national" or "international" interest) is regarded as a valid principle to guide legislation -lobbies and pressure groups will continue to exist. Since there is no such entity as 'the public,' since the public is merely a number of individuals, the idea that 'the public interest' supercedes private interest and rights, can have but one meaning: that the interest and rights of some individuals take precedence over the interest and rights of others."

-From the book "Capitalism: The Unknown Idea" by Ayn Rand (pg.170)

If there was one book that I believe that you ought to read, it would be this book by Ayn Rand so you can finally know why your rights continue to erode for the sake of “public interest.”

Of course, many gun owners are voting Republican because they do not want to lose their right. Of course, if you have to wait until politicians to give you permission to your rights, then you really don’t have a right to begin with.

As another excerpt from this book states the true nature of our two parties;

(pg. 146)
“For instance, consider the conflict between the Republicans and the Democrats (and, within each party the same conflict between the “conservatives” and the “liberals”). Since both parties hold altruism as their basic moral principle, both advocate a welfare state or mixed economy as their ultimate goal. Every government control imposed on the economy (regardless in whose favor) necessitates the imposition of further control, to alleviate - momentarily – the disasters caused by the first control. Since the Democrats are more consistently committed to the growth of government power, the Republicans are reduced to helpless “me-too’ing,” to inept plagiarism of any program initiated by the Democrats, and to the disgraceful confession implied in their claim that they seek to achieve the same ends as the Democrats, but by different means.

Isn’t this true? Once Al Gore proposed a prescription drug program, George “Dubya” Bush proposes his prescription drug program. I think in maybe in about ten more years, the Democrats will propose their firearm confiscation program, and the Republicans will argue that they have a better firearm confiscation program.

I cringe whenever Dubya says “for the sake of (fill in the blank).”

Is there hope? Yes, but as Ayn Rand states in the book (pg. 146) “There is no way to stop or change that process except at the root: by a change of basic principles.”

Which party best represents YOUR PRINCIPLES? You need to decide. I know what my principles are, do you?

Rights vs. Public Interest
capitalism vs. socialism

All of that is true. But, as far as elections go, you are not going to change any basic principles. The best that you can do is buy time. Changing the basic principles requires changing public opinion. That will take decades of hard work.

Do we have decades to change public opinion?

I guess people are ready to just give up, but I'm not. There will always be pressure to grow government, and if you don't change it now, then by the time you try to it will be too late.
