Right rings and base for savage fcp-k with vortex

So this is indeed kinda of a 'noob' question, but I just wanted to get some opinions before I buy the hardware. I just bought a vortex viper 6.5-20X50 and I'm getting ready buy buy the savage fcp-k. Now I just need to buy the right rings and base. Anyone have any suggestions of a good combination for a decent price. The rifle won't be getting major abuse so I don't need the most expensive type, but I do want ones that can guarantee no scope walk and such under normal use. I am trying to have everything ordered online, and hopefully around the same time. So if anyone has prior experience with clearances of the savage 10 line of rifles and 50mm objectives, that would help minimize down time.

I also haven't decided whether I need a 20MOA base or not, since the viper has limited elevation adjustment. I want to EVENTUALLY reach out to 1000 yards, but realistically I'm far from ready to shoot at that range accurately. I do want to keep that option open though considering I live in AZ and am not to far from open land where I can shoot as far as the eye can see. Thanks!

How much elevation adjustment does your Vortex scope have?

Realizing that if you put a 20 MOA base on your Savage, you'll need at least 20 MOA of down travel in order to zero your scope at 100 yds. One thing to remember....your scopes "zero" probably won't be exactly half of its elevation range less the 20 MOA base. So...you could find yourself bottomed out with the scope elevation and still hitting high at your 100 yd zero.

I just scoped a 10FCP a few months back. I used a 20 MOA base and mounted a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-4x50mm FFP mil-dot mil-turret scope. It has a 30mm tube. My 100 yard zero is .4 mil from full bottom. (yes...I almost didn't make it)

I am using Burris XTR medium height rings, which are 1/2" high per the Burris web site. Their low 1/4" rings would have fit....I didn't switch as I didn't feel like ordering another set. I had already lapped these so there was no sending them back. Here is my 10FCP rifle.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will look more into those items.

The scope has 68 MOA of adjustment. As you said though, its hard to predict where in that spectrum it will zero though. So assuming it's in the middle, it will hardly not reach 1000. Honestly Im not that worried about 1000, because I won't be shooting that for a while, I just like to buy things right once and not have to replace things all the time.

I just wanted to mention something I learned the other day, if you are zeroing that far, yit limits your windage MOA. But I guess you only need that much windage for super long range either way. Just thought it was worth mentioning

I put the EGW 20 MOA base and a set of medium Leupold QRW rings on my Savage LR .243 I built. I went with a 1" tube Weaver 3-10 Tactical GS scope so I knew I'd need the canted base to get out there. I have a a two piece Burris XTR scope base, as my EGW was backordered. However it came in before I was able to get my rifle together, they are NIB if interested drop me a PM.

I don't think you need a 20moa base. I use an EGW 20moa base coupled with their tactical rings, 30mm tube and I believe they are low rings. This is for a signtron sIII 6-24x50 on a savage vlp .243. I would seriously look into egw I'm very impressed with the products I have from them.

edit: as far as ring height goes, it is actually very easy math to determine. Most manufactures give you the measurements you need to figure this out. I know there is a very thorough guide on this over on the optics talk forum as I don't think I've seen this talked about here before

After further research and attempting to stay in my price range I have found the following configuration:

Are those the correct model's/sizes for a savage fcp-k and vortex viper 6.5-20X50 .
I'm almost positive it is,but always worth a try to see if anyone knows more. Also, any other place but optics planet someone can recommend for a good deal. Thanks!

Burris Signature Zee rings would give you the ability to remove (or add) elevation offset (or not) and IMHO, they're just nice rings, to boot.

The Signature Zees use plastic ring inserts to avoid marring the scope, and to allow for essentially a "self lapping" design.
By getting different thickness ring inserts, you can adjust POI up or down.

Personally, I would go with what you have. The XTRs are good rings (I use them on my AR varmint build), and EGW base has a good reputation as well.

I prefer to use Ken Farrell 1pc bases, and only use Burris Signature Zee rings.
They cost a little more, but they are well worth it.Sinclair usually has some good prices on both.
