Has anyone refinished the stock of their rifle. The stock on my Remington 597 is getting worn, the finish didn't seem too strong from the first. I've seen a kit at Rural King the comes with everything you need. Is this a good idea?

Get a book on it. Check out your local library for old gun digests, periodicals or books, as stock refinishing used to be something that a lot of gunowners did. I've only refinished the stock on my AK. That was done with sandpaper, lacquer thinner, steel wool and tung oil. Just take your time and get an idea of what you want before your start.

Stock refinishing

All you need is:
Sandpaper
Bottle of liquid black shoe polish [To simulate the grain.
Stock or Wood finish.
EITHER but not both of the following:
Spray polyurithene or,
Boiled neetsfoot oil.

Good wood,?like walnut. sandpaper,stripper if in a
hurry, and casey's trueoil, 6 or 7 coats then rub
down looks great, last long time.

Make sure you use a fine paper. Start with maybe 240 & go to 320. Make sure you sand in the same direction as the grain.

I once used a fancy bottle of Tung Oil. It seemed like a cross between an oil & a lacquer. The project is a large oak knot hole I made into a picture frame. After 22 years, it looks beautiful & I've never retouched it at all.
