Hi,

For someone starting as a beginner into skeet/trap shooting, what is a nice
common sense, reasonable priced rifle or shot gun to first purchased to get
into the sport? Lets say a budget of around $400 to $500.00.

Would the Marlin 39a rifle be a fine choice, or is .22 cal to light for the sport?

Im very intrigued by those classic lever action rifles of Marlin, Henry, Browning.

Thanks

Not sure the marlin will do you well in skeet or trap.

But just fine for a first rifle. I like the Ruger 10/22 (semi automatic) for all the aftermarket parts.

CZ bolt action

Any of the ones you said for lever.

You really don't want to shoot a rifle up into the sky, not even a .22.

Skeet and trap has to be shot with shotguns because you are shooting at tagets in the sky. Most skeet/trap clubs don't even allow shot bigger than 6 or 7 1/2 because it flys too far before falling to the ground.

Get an 870 Express 12 ga. and use the leftover money for shells and flights. While a pump is not the best choice for skeet it can be done and is quite fun once you get the hang of it.

not

pretty much a shotgun sport

Not "pretty much".....completely much a shotgun sport.
To the Op.....as you probably understand at this point, rifles are not used in Skeet nor in Trap or Sporting Clays.

I used my Remington 870 for skeet for a long time --- with no problems.

Later shot with an 1100 (which I've since sold) - and will eventually get an over/under.

What's the benefit of over/under? You can set your shotgun up with two different chokes (a wide pattern for your first shot --- more narrow pattern for the second shot).

Hey - what the heck are we doing talking about shotguns in the rifle forum?

BTW - I have on a couple occasions, shot bird shot rounds out of my .22
(a little less power than a 410). That said - I don't recommend it --- I don't imagine the rifling really likes that idea.

Using a rifle for skeet or trap or sporting clays is the equivalent of using a shotgun w/ buckshot for a 500 yard shot... it's not meant to be used for that application! Also, a rifle won't suffice to make hits on the clays because their patterns consist of one pellet. You ought to look into the lower end Stoeger O/U's. They will run around 300-500 and will do the trick as an entry level gun for skeet and trap.

Read up on the differences between skeet, trap, and sporting clays so you know what you're getting into and then start looking for a gun.

nodule, at this stage of your learning curve, I strongly suggest that you go to Wikipedia and search for "skeet shooting". Then come back with your questions.

As far as .22 rimfire rifles, yes, the Marlin 39 is well-respected.
