rifled barrel questions

12 guage with rifled barrel...any problem shooting 00 buck? I'm guessing the wadding cup means there is no problem for the barrel, but may mean the shot pattern is near worthless? BUT, figured I'd ask some shotgunners...and if using shot, does it matter what kind (tungsten, etc?) with rifled barrel? And, another dumb question I guess..what's difference in a rifled barrel and a deer barrel, if any?

Shooting buckshot won't harm your rifled bbl, but it will spread faster & the pattern may be more "ragged". For a rifled shotgun bbl, I'd prefer lead or copper-plated lead buckshot. Actually I'd probably just use slugs.

Rifled barrels are rifled. "Deer barrels", or slug barrels, or whatever a company may call them, were traditionally a shorter length(I remember seeing various companies listing them at anywhere from 18.5" to 24"), smooth bore with either IC or Cyl Bore choke, with open sights.

Do not use non-toxic shot in a rifled shotgun barrel! The much harder shot will destroy the very shallow rifling in short order. And I'm not really sure if these barrels are built to handle this type of shot in the first place. Yes, lead or plated lead shot will work but you patterns will be lousy.

BTW - use only saboted slugs in a rifled barrel as standard Forster-type slugs won't hit crap!

It's best to get a smoothebore and just use rifled slugs...that way the gun is much more versatile.

I really can't understand why people are so into sabot slugs...I mean if you want precision, buy a rifle...rifles are much better for precision and penetration anyway. To me, shotguns are for...well, let's see...SHOT!!! Ah ha! That's where the name came from... :D

Well... because in many places it's the law.

OK, sorry, I was just being funny...or at least trying :) .

I didn't think that they had laws like that in Oklahoma.

ammunition?

shifting topic just a little bit..but..will any 870 handle 3 inch sheels if the 3 inch barrel is used? If not, how do you know which receiver is 3 inch and which is not?
