TCW, I'll be the first to happily suggest Savage. as I peruse my SOG catalog, I see that dealer price on the 110FP "tactical" .308 is $369 which has a synthetic stock, short action, heavy blued barrel, and great accuracy as Savage is known for. The Savage 11G is .308, wood stock, short action, and regular taper barrel and is selling for $279. This month's Gun Tests magazine tested the Savage 110, CZ 527, Remington 700 BDL, and Ruger M77R MKII all in .223 cal. The Remington got a "Buy it" rating, but the Savage got the "Best Buy"...partially because that model comes with a free scope (actually included in the price) but for the most part because the rifle "goes from the store shelf to under an inch for less money than most pistols." The other rifles got a "Conditional Buy" and a "Don't Buy." Basically, the Savage shot as well as the $633 dollar Remington, but it's uglier by far. I love my ugly Savages...can you tell?
