Rifle question, Egyptian Hakim

I have a couple of questions about the Hakim rifles. First is about magazine availability. I know the rifle comes with a 10 round mag, are extras readily available?
Also, how about reliability in the real world? Anybody out there have one of these rifles? I saw a couple at the gun show yesterday, and my shooting buddy wants one REAL bad. We both have Mausers and all that cheap ammo out there would also work in the Hakim.
TIA for any help.

I've owned one for a few years now. I apid $175 in excellent condition. As for extra mags, the last one I saw for sale the guy wanted $100.00! They are about non-existant. The Swedish Ljungman mags are said to work & are just as hard to find. They are a good shooting rifle IMO. The only drawback is its very heavy, but balances well with really no felt recoil.

Mags are basically nonexistant. It also won't charge from mauser strippers.

The one rifle I had experience with was a mixed bag. It shot well, but suffered some reliability issues. Trigger problems and misfeeds. It was an interesting gun, but also a troublemaker. An FN49 would be a much better choice to take advantage of all that cheap 8mm ammunition.

I know three people who bought a Hakim. All three broke their extractor. They seem to be rather selective about which surplus ammunition they liked also.

Thanks, gents for your prompt replies. I'll copy this info and send it to my friend. He's hot to trot about the Hakim, I'm not sure if he knows about the FN49.
fal308, I imagine the extractors are non-existant as well?
Sounds like the whole idea may not be a good one, nothing worse than no parts available for the inevitable problem.

FWIW, Ljungman mags can be used, but, as noted, they are not easy to find either. If the extractors are breaking, it is likely because the gas valve is open too far, putting too much gas into the system. The gas system has to be adjusted for the ammunition being used. Start with the minimum opening and work up.

Hi. I have used the Hakim before.

Mags: OEM mags are not available, readily or not. Federal Arms made some 25 round mags, which aren't readily available either. However, you can buy MG13 mags which will hold 25 rounds.
They are available from IMA, and they are reasonably priced.

Reliability in real world: provided you adjust the gas system and provide a stable firing platform, it should work well. I remember the first time I shot in a small match with it.....I impressed the marines running it with my ability to quickly clear jams. Had to kick it open, as it was tearing the rims off the old, soft Egyptian surplus 8mm.

This particular rifle has had at least a case run through it in civillian ownership, and is still running strong.

Oh, one thing no one has mentioned yet is the recoil---there isn't any. That muzzle brake is amazing!
