Rifle in .338 Win. Mag.

Going to buy one in the next month or so, primarily for hunting elk out in Colorado.

I'm looking at the Tikka Whitetail Hunter as a first choice, because it's basically a Sako without paying for the name. If not that, I may pony up the extra couple of hundred dollars and get an A-Bolt with the BOSS on it.

Also, I suspect I'll be shooting at less than 300 yards and would like to hear some recommendations on a good piece of glass that won't absolutely break the bank. I have a 3-9x50 Tasco World Class on my Savage 10FP that shoots 1/2 MOA as a package so I don't really want to pull it off and slap it on the new rifle. Something good in the $200-250 range is what I'm thinking.

Thanks in advance for the comments.

I live and hunt in Colorado, too. For hunting, I like the Tasco World Class (as you have on the Savage) because accidents happen and Tasco has a no-fault warrantee. For varmints or target, where glass should be better, but so are the conditions, I'll use a better scope. Isn't it funny how one of the "lower" scope makers has the best warrantee? BTW, the Tasco Super Sniper is getting rave reviews from Snipercountry.com and others.

My favorite scope in the $200-$250 range is definately the Leupold Vari-XII 3x9. Among my family we have 6, all of which have performed flawlessly (some of my Dad's have seen 20+ years of hard use).

As for the .338, I highly recomend a muzzle break.........and some ear plugs.

Let me start by saying I own an .338 A-Bolt with muzzle break and topped with a Leopold VariX 3x9x40 scope. Loaded with 230 gr Winchester Failsafes, this combination is my favorite to shoot. I've used for everything from Antelope to Elk with fine results.

I originally had a Redfield 3x9 scope, but once they went out of business, I picked up my Leopold used through S.W.F.A out of Texas and pd $157.95. It had ring marks from someone that tried it but changed their mind and returned. I've never had a problem with it. You can check out their websight at http://www.riflescopes.com/.

As far as the muzzle break goes, when shooting it outside, I don't really think it is that loud. Since the sound is going away from you, unless someone is standing beside you, there isn't that much noise to worry about. I just returned from antelope hunting in WY with it and both my dad and brother commented that it wasn't as loud as they expected, and they were on each side of me laying prone when I shot. If you are at an enclosed range or one with a tin roof, you will definitely hear it echo though.

Good luck on the purchase, I think both your gun choices are solid, and you can get some good glass for what you are willing to spend.

My two cents. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I think I'm probably going to go with the Tikka. I like the BOSS, but I can't justify the extra money that I would have to lay out for a rifle that I'm not going to shoot more than a handful of times each year. I figure I can get the Tikka AND the scope for about what I'd pay for the A-Bolt by itself.

That's what I love about this place. A guy (or gal) can always get a straight answer.

Thanks.
