Grandfather had this old rifle laying around. Didnt know a whole lot about it. I have been browsing entering numbers I have found on the reciever and the bolt. The only numbers that are clear enough to make out. I dont believe its a springfield 1903.... The number on the reciever is V1736, the six isnt clear. And 446 on the bolt.

Looks like a Spanish Mauser, model of 1893 or 1895, calibre 7x57.
Might be a 1916 converted to 7.62 though.
There ought to be a national crest on the receiver ring and the maker's name on the left side. Maybe it was buffed too hard when refinished.

Ill see where he aquired it from. But I know he went to basic in Fort Hood, Tx. Then was stationed it Germany for the longest time.

Or a 1909 7.65 Argentine .... which looks really similar to the '95 ..... consult a gunsmith before firing.

Jim nailed it.

Spanish Model 1916 short rifle, built on the 1893 Mauser pattern action (the action on a 1895 is similar, but the stock is different). Look at the bolt shroud. And yes, it could be converted to 7.62X51mm, so have it checked.

1909 Argentines were in the white, had a pistol grip, and are a 1898 Mauser pattern rifle.

You guys want more pics of the action? Thanks for the Id. I have looked at other pictures and it looks identical.

Ok, just got back from the gunsmith and he couldnt confirm what round it was chambered for. He said since there arent any markings that he would have to take it apart to tell. He said It doesnt look to be re-chambered as it looks to be the original barrel.

Im gonna go to another gunsmith and get his opinion. I really want to shoot this thing!

I don't think you have to disassemble the gun to slug the bore and try a few headspacing guages .... Either your gunsmith does not know his business, or was more likely blowing you off ....

Ask how much it would cost to make a chamber cast...... or DIY it. It is not hard. 1/2 lb of cerrosafe is $20-$25 bucks......

A box of crayons is a lot less and works fine for chamber casts.
