Rifle help

I've shot a lot of guns, and own a few. But all my rifles are bolt and 1 lever gun. I've decided I want something tacticool. Hi-cap mags, easy to break down and transport, good effective range out to 300m. Cheap ammo. It'll be used for paper and plinking only. (I don't hunt) I was really looking into a rem 597, but if I'm going to spend $400 to $500 I might as well get something with more boom. But I don't know what all is available. So I'm asking your collective knowledge. It needs to be accurate and reliable, easy to break down for easy packing, modular, so I can swap optics and grips. Semi-auto. And have really cheap ammo. Because I want to shoot the hell out of it without giving up my spleen.

So with that being said, any ideas?

I never said under $500, I said if I was going to spend $500, I might as well save up and get something other than a .22 LR. I was thinking about an AR, but I wanted to know what else is out there. Looking to see what all my options are. Its kinda like a car, "I want a fast car": "oh, well get a mustang"...when really, if I'd only known, a lotus blows it out of the water.

Ok, here's the thing. I'm not looking for the cheapest, or the best deal. I'm looking for whats out there. I don't know and can't possibly search online all the cool semi-auto's in existance. I know what an AR is, I'm looking for what else is out there that meets what I want in a rifle. I was origionally looking at a rem 597, just because .22LR ammo is so cheap, but with them costing as much as they do why not just spend a little more for something with more boom? I don't want a 10/22 because no matter how much you put into it, you still just own a .22. An AR in .223 could fit the bill, got it. I was just wondering what else was out there. SCARS, F2000, Robinson XRC... Stuff like that. There are better designs out there than the AR, I was looking for those. Walmart has the SIG 5.56 for $800, has an AR for $700.... But I want something else.

I see you are at Ft Polk. I would go with "The prefered rifle of our enemy" an AK47 with a folding stock. Ammo is cheap.

Ak's arn't really modular, accurate, or easy to break down. If I got anything on an AK platform, it'd bea saigas 12.

I looked at that rock river site, they actually have some really nice AR's for $1000-1500. All the features I'd want in an AR.

Hey, I have an idea:

Just get an AR.

There are better designs out there than the AR, I was looking for those.

No, not really. Well, maybe a bolt action...but you want an auto-shucker.

Oh, you're right.... A rifle designed in 1957 is the best  and no rifles designed today or ever could possibly be better  guess I should just follow the herd and buy an AR instead of trying to find options. Thanks for clearing it all up for me.

There have been many improvements to the rifle that was designed as the M16 and first issued to SF soldiers in 1964. That's why its so popular. Most of the kinks have been worked out. If you find something better, let us all know so that we can go out and buy it. :)

Generally speaking, rifles designed since are merely so called improvements, and solutions to non-existent problems.

Newer design ≠ better design

Sounds like you want something different for the sake of being different, not necessarily because it is better.

It that is the case, I repeat my recommendation for the MG34.

Well thats kinda the point of this post...to see what was out there. If I had the money and desire to buy every type of rifle and test them and give the results (not that they'd be believed anyway) I wouldn't of asked, I'd of just posted results.

With that being said, I did like the rock river elite operator2, and may end up buying one of those (baaaa). So thanks for the link.

I would say an AK47 clone chambered in .223 or 5.45x39mm would be your best options. 223 would be more effective at 300 yards but 5.45 is around 17 cents a round while 223 is about 25 cents a round. if you saved a little more a perfectly serviceable AR15 from either palmetto state armory or smith and wesson are only about $600.

also it's not exactly high cap but the beretta CX4 storm in 40 cal would be a fairly competent plinker out to 300 yards.

Just a general note... If you google AK-47 clone you're going to pull up a lot of sites about pot... I thought it awful strange to see "growing AK-47 clone in my closet" as a link....

If you are looking for something different than an AR, get a Hi Point... ugly as hell, but they have great warranties. Should satisfy the "something different" craving!:D
