Rifle Handgun combo

Just a general question up for discussion.
If you could only have 1 handgun & 1 longarm that both used the same caliber, like a lot of people did back in the day, what would consider the best all around choice?
I currently have a Ruger BH & Rossi Mod 92 in 45 Colt and couple of .357 revolvers paired with a recently acquired Rossi in same caliber. Now I'm looking for a BH in 30 carb to pair with my M1 Carbine. Tough decision if I had to pick only one.

For some reason, the first thing that came to mind was a 2-bore / 2-bore combination.

1/2 pound of lead on top of 350 gr FFg... for a "light" load. ;)
(Not my build. Not my rifle. Just something I've been following.)

I do a lot of shooting in conditions where handgun cartridges are less than ideal. So, I'm not much of a fan of the idea.
But... I'd say I would probably go with a .44 Mag pairing, if the situation were to arise.

I already have a handgun/carbine combo - Beretta 92F/Beretta CX4 Storm
I would like a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in 357 Magnum to pair up with my S&W 686 in lue of that, the same rifle in 44 Magnum to pair up with my Ruger Vaquero.
