Rifle Dilema...

OK, going to a camping/hunting/shooting/shooting training thing next month.

They are going to teach a rifle course, which I want to sign up for.

I currently have as far as rifles, a Ruger 10/22, and an SKS. While the Ruger is sub MOA easily, the SKS is MOPP (Minute of Pie Plate) at best. So I need another rifle before the camp.

I have a few AR15 lowers which "fell in the lake, which is why I never registered them" and there is an off chance I can find them again if I really need to, that's why they haven't been reported as lost... (right?)

I can buy uppers for them, but I'm not a big AR15 fan, I just got the lowers because I couldn't anymore in Kalifonia if I didn't.

So I'm thinking something like a .243 in bolt, or .308. I am not sure if this class is a "how to shoot a rifle correctly" or a "how to use a rifle in a tactical situation" if it's the latter, then I will want to get a semi, instead of a bolt.

OK, so let's assume it's the latter. I am willing to spend maybe $600-700 total.

What can I get in that price range?? The M14's are $$$, I was thinking possibly an M1 Garand. The new Springfields are $$$ and most of the used ones are in 30-06, and I don't know about the quality of "GI parts" as far as accuracy of the barrel.

So asside from M14's and Garands, I'm looking for suggestions.

Thanks.

Savage Scout

If I were taking a course like that I would take a Savage Scout Rifle with the Leupold scope on it. Then you could do most anything. I'm guessing that the course is oriented towards just shooting and not for tactical type shooting.

Why not get an SAR-2? Under $300, accurate, no recoil and cheap ammo. It fires the 5.45 mm Commie cartridge. Check out http://www.aimsurplus.com I don't know if it is legal in Kali. I am sure you are more familiar than I.

Of course, you could use this as the excuse to buy an M1A.

Why not one of those STG-58's (FN FAL) that I keep seeing at show's, and in the Shotgun News? 7.62 NATO, magazine fed, and proven in battle. It's not an AK or more recent derivative. It's in a readily available cartridge, and they seem to be right in your price range.

I say this only because I am thinking about one myself. I have a Garand, and a couple of bolt guns, not to mention the 10/22. It'd be what I'd consider getting.

Let us know what you decide.

I think the issue is WHAT CALIBER? and not the gun.

Can you handle recoil? How much?

I would keep in mind the full intentions of the gun. So as if you hill hunt with it or just shoot as a tactical, or HD?

if hunting and tactical. buy a .308 bolt
if tactical and HD. buy a .223 semiauto

if not a real fan keep in mind the 10/22

keep blasting!
