Rifle cases... is there one in between $20 and $200?

I am looking for a hard rifle case, for a scoped rifle, I don't want a cheapo delux model, and I can't afford a Pelican or anything that expensive, who makes a decent hard sided case for a scoped rifle for around $75? Any ideas? Thanks...
BJ.

Billy, just like optics, a hard case isn't something to skimp on, especially if you plan on traveling. Again like optics, if you buy a good one the first time you won't be buying them over and over again. Check out www.starlightcases.com and remember you get 15% off for online orders. They make excellent cases that last. I just bought one and it's built like a tank. Read on their site about the tests. Save some more money and get one. You won't be sorry.

I've been using GunGuard cases for years and haven't had any complaints. They usually run about $40 to $50. If I were handing them over to an airline, though, I might have second thoughts.

I know very little about the quality of cases, but if I do start flying to hunts, you can bet I'll do my homework. That being said, Bass Pro Shops carries a decent aluminum hard case for around $79. Seems like they'd be fine for ordinary use traveling to the range or to hunts via automobile. They look nice as well as pretty sturdy, but I don't know how well they'd hold up against a baggage handler at the airport. Those guys are worse than the gorillas in the old Samsonite commercials. Last flight I took, I saw some poor guy's golf clubs (not in a hard case) get plopped upside down on the tarmack. Bet there were some insurance forms to fill out on that checked luggage.

If you check the Bass Pro website, look under hunting and shooting accessories, you can see the cases listed but with no pic. I believe that they're made by Target Zone: http://www.tz-case.com/product/aluminum/gun/gun.html The prices on this page are suggested retail though. Most places, like Bass Pro, have them for about half that price--for instance, look here: http://www.wholesalehunter.com/product/tzcase/tzhome.htm

Hope that helps. These seem like a compromise between Plano and Pelican. But like others say here, if I were going to fly with my rifle, I'd take a hard look at the Pelicans.

If you want something that will stand up to airline baggage handlers, the least expensive, really good case that I have found is the SKB. As a bonus, their two-rifle cases have wheels on one end and a handle on the other. That is a huge bonus in an airport.

Don't forget garage sales! I've found a couple of halliburtons for $20. Some people just don't know what they are selling. I feel so bad for them. :D

Don't know where you live, but I'd suggest checking at a Cabela's, Gander Mountain, or Bass Pro Shop. I was in Minnesota and stopped at the Cabela's off of I-35. Picked up an aluminum sided double gun case for $99 in the bargain cave, half the price of the case new. Only problem with it was a scratch in the side. My brother did the same thing and picked up a case at the Sidney, NE store, bit "fancier" model, paid $125. Both cases went to Africa and Alaska and can take the affects of traveling.

You should be able to find several in the price range you mentioned, so good luck in your search.
