Revolvers In The Military

Does the U.S. Military still issue revolvers to any of it'd service members? I was active duty from 85-89. And although the M9 Beretta had just about phased out the 1911 in combat unit's, you still saw revolvers being carried by USAF and Navy Aviators, as well as USAF SP's. I seem to remember the SP's carrying Ruger Security Six's, and the Aviarors carrying S&W M10's. I could be mistaken. I also remember Navy SEAL's having large frame S&W .357's(along with Sig 226's) in thier aromry. Are all the Revolvers gone?

When I got out of the Air Force in 1988, us SPs were carrying S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpieces and the M9 Berettas were just being phased in. I loved the S&W but the ammo we had to use was really crap. My ex-wife was an Air Force small arms instructor and they had to rotate the ammo supply; reserve ammo to duty ammo to practice ammo, etc. When they got a surplus of rotated ammo, they would shoot it off on the range, plinking at various targets. When they shot at empty wooden ammo crates, those FMJ .38s would often bounce off.

My 2 cents

I enlisted in 98 as Security Forces. I was a sentry for 2 1/2 years before cross training. I did a substantial amount of firing @ Malmstrom AFB in Montana. I also worked with armory folks alot and as far as they knew or seen the Air Force thru experance, the AF stopped issueing wheelguns before the 90's (this actually came up in conversation during 203 firing and cleaning). I know that the Air Force does not have any wheel guns listed as resources or support weapons as listed in Airman Magazine during it's anniversary issue.
