Revolver vs Automatics at Gun Show

I am an old wheel gunner and love them. All the shows down here in S. Florida 60% are autommatics. Every one wants one because everyone has one. Most are plastic guns with metal barrels. Give me am old steel revolver any time. Yes I have some auto's also, Belgine Browning Hi-Power, Beretta 84W, Ruger Mark II, Bersa .380, Ruger 345 45ACP.

I also have wheel guns, all the stainless Security Six and Blued Security six. 1 police six and speed six, bunch of BlackHawks, 22, 22Mag, 357, 45LC 44 Mag. I also have the 5.5 Redhawk SS in 44 Mag.

I need to feel the weight of the gun so I know I am shooting something and the gun isn't shooting me.

Just a thought ...

You'll always get the best deals buying something that isn't popular at the moment. There are some nice revolver deals out there IF you're not looking for a pocket snubbie

We all have our preferences, that's for sure.

I like a good mix, myself. I don't need several of one kind, but can find reasons for having several different kinds, for sure.

I like that heft and solid feel, as well as the handling and shooting of a good SA revolver. I also like the feel and speed of a good DA revolver.

I only own a few semi-autos, and only one of them has a plastic frame. As much as I hate plastic guns, it's a very serviceable carry pistol that goes with me nearly always these days. Feel is decent, reliability is 100% thus far, and while it's not "purdy", it's very easy to carry and shoot well. I'm not in love with it, but I entrust my life to it without a second thought.

But as much as I love the various aspects of guns and shooting, I've never been to a gunshow. Just me, I guess, but they don't hold much interest for me.

No Colts or S&W ?

He smarter than many :D. I myself refuse to own any of the over priced brands and prefer Ruger over any of them too.

I don't have any centerfire brass chuckers anymore, sold em off and prefer wheelguns myself. That being said, semi's do have many advantages. Easier to strip/clean and ammo capacity come to mind first. As much as I hate Glocks, a person with only one gun could do a lot worse than a Glock.

I get some interesting looks when Im looking at older revolvers instead of the new semi-autos. No one expects the 23 year old kid to be checkin out the S&W 66s. I only own 2 semis. A Ruger P89 and Mk2. I prefer pinned and recessed over a big magazine.

Obviously you're a man of discriminating tastes.

Add a P345 or P90 to those and you'll have a pretty complete set. My 9mm is a P95 but there's nothing wrong with the P89.

I love and have both. Ruger sp101 (357), Ruger 44 super redhawk, Ruger 380, Ruger P90 (45). I love them all. You can't go wrong with a Ruger of any kind. :D

With some work on my Ruger SP101, it's finally shootable. It came from the factory with the cylinder completely out of spec. Three of the cylinder chambers were too small and wouldn't allow the cartridges to seat properly. The front end of the cylinder was also slanted (higher on one side than the other). This gun was purchased by my son and he shot it this way, until he complained about it to me and I saw it. He didn't want to mess with it, so I traded him another one of my guns. I talked to Ruger about the gun and the gun shop that sold the gun to my son, sent it back for me. Two months later, I got the gun back, but the trigger was too stiff. So, I had my gunsmith work on it cleaning it and the action up. Then I finally got it and now it shoots fine.

I have purchased other Rugers including a couple of P89s, a P95, a p345, and an LCP along with numerous wheel guns, (3) Single six, (5) Vaqueros, (2) Redhawks, and (2) Super Redhawks. And, I think my S&W 28-2 and my Colt Trooper Mark III are better wheel guns than all the Ruger wheel guns I've owned. And, I definitely won't buy another Ruger pistol, because I can't stand the triggers.

So, in effect, I'd say that I am definately done with Rugers.

Big Bill...Too bad about that Ruger sp101 you have. I have never had a problem with any of my Rugers. I did have a Springfield Champion I didn't like. It didn't shoot as well as a Glock or my P90. I think Ruger puts out a real nice pistol for the money.

Rugers forever

I put my trust in Rugers and my life. Outside of some bad ammo never had any issues with them. Had to sell them all when the kids came along. You know hoe fasr kids go through clothes. Well the Kids are gone and it has taken me about 3 years to get back most of my collections, still looking for the Blackhawk 45LC/45ACP convertable. Not going to pay the price they want.

Rugers Best for the price and staying power. I am not crazy about S&W, have 2 for sale now, S&W 22A and 66. The only Colts I ever had were 45's in the 70's, National Match and combat commander. No colts now.

I own 4 semi-autos and one revolver. The revolver is a 44 mag for backwoods duty only. I would never use it for a carry piece, it's too big.

Rugers are nice. There SA are amazing for the price. But when it comes to DA, Colt revolvers are my poison... I love em... If you got the coin. I do love my 2 GP-100s. wouldn't trade em for the world.

I would very much like a Python sooner then later because they just keep getting more and more expensive. Can't decide on a 4" or 6" because I like 5" barrels :o And its not like they are laying around @ stores for me to try out...

OK sorry off topic.

I can think of numerous reasons of why autos dominate gun shows nowadays. But I don't have the time to type all of it right now. My generations mindset "tacticool," price/availability don't see many pythons laying around for 400 bucks now do ya? but there are piles of Glocks... New shooters tend to go with whats cheap and available. Then as the become more interested in our sport the toys, parts, and such become more and more expensive.

Old S&W P&R, old Colts and DW are getting harder each year to find in good shape and fair prices, the old 'they ain't making anymore of em.' So people that have em charge a premium. I also think many of (pardon me) older shooters that had these guns have already sold them or past them on.

I've noticed this especially with Dan Wessons as of late. I remember seeing them @ gun shows when I was 18-20 and they had pretty reasonable prices now? forget it.

I always look for revolvers when I go to gunshows. Like you said, most people are there to fondle all the glocks and AR's. A good number of people trade in their revolvers for the latest tupperware.

60%, not 80%?!

FL has a lot of old timers, your lucky!

I was thinking the same thing. 60% auto to 40% revolver is very good. Where I live, it is more like 85:15 autos to revolvers. Some shows I've been to were more like 95:5 :( .

The small percentage of new revolvers at any of these shows are almost all snub nose, five shot models. Great. I guess that's what the market wants. The remaining models are mostly geared towards hunters or cowboy action.

I still think it's nuts that I can buy a J, L, or N-frame .357 magnum, but the Model 66 has been discontinued. (Thank goodness for the used market.)
