revolver porting- just a gimmick?

I have a few Taurus revolvers and all are ported. For the lower velocity cartridges I doubt it does much good at all. Specifically I don't get why a .38 Special snubbie needs porting. I hear people swear they feel a difference. I don't. And I don't with the 45 LC either. Physics predicts little difference in muzzle rise with heavy bullet, low velocity cartridges, too. The porting does create more flash. Also the ports get dirty. Does anyone else wonder if some of the porting is just a gimmick?

In my opinion, even if it just helps a little, it still helps. For some smaller people, it may be just what they need.

I've often wondered the same thing. I have a Taurus ultra-lite M85 that is ported and a SS M85 that isn't and the unported one seems to kick less than the ported one. Of course, since it weighs nearly twice as much, I suspect that the extra weight helps to absorb the recoil.
