Revolver locking mechanism?

First timer here!! I have heard and read about some concerns regarding Smith and Wesson revolvers. Apparently there have been some cases where the locking mechanism has locked itself rendering the gun unable to fire. What if anything have you folks heard about this?? What year did the locks end up on the Smiths? Also what does MIM parts mean? Thanks.

I've not heard of that happening.

MIM is Metal Injection Molding. When done right it's ok, when done poorly it's really bad.

Ive never had this problem with my S&W but my guess is that the spring on the cyclinder lock might kink or get bent which would keep the gun from locking thats just my guess never heard of that a gun smith could probable put another one in for a couple of bucks if thats the case

Go to www.smith-wessonforum.com and do a search for locks. There are few folks over there who have personally had the internal lock cause the gun to fail on them. Mas Ayoob has written about them failing also, in American Handgunner magazine.

I think the failures he wrote about are in the ultra lightweights.

I have one of these locks on my S&W M66 - not a problem so far (a year old) and doesn't seem to be loose or rattle. Next time I take it to bits I'll see if I can remove it. I don't like the idea in principle.

Woops thought he was talking about his cylinder latch good thing that wasnt broken dont know much about the new key locks never used my the key is still in the case the gun came in so I cant help ya there I have however heard of people having problems with them lately sorry couldnt be more help once again my mistake probable read it to fast

I joined the S&W forum and so far have found one instances where the man dropped his gun and the lock engaged and other the lock was messed up when he got it new.most of what they say are just plain rumors, well a friend of friend heard that it happened to so and so but none so far that has come forward and said yes it happened to ME.All I see is a bunch of people who just can't take change in anyway.I have two Smiths with the locks a 66 with over 4000 and a 686 with over 2000 rounds fired. If you don't like the locks don't turn them ON.But I still have some posts yet to go thru so maybe I will be wrong????????
