I came across a *&* model 58 that I was considering. I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about this revolver. The serial number is: N272---. I just thought this would complement my model 57 nicely. :D

58 is the Military & Police version. Came with fixed sights only and only in 4" barrel. Service hammer spur and grips rather than target.

Service gun for some law enforcement. Nevada State police for one.

Books for quite a bit more than 57 in equal condition. $450 for 98 percenter.

Can't help with the number vs year.

Model 58's were made from @64-77. Just under 20.300 were made. Available in blue or nickel, didn't have an ejector rod shroud. SN you list puts it at @ 75-77. Since other N frames were SN'd in the same range, you would need to call S&W or request a letter (@ $30 IIRC) to narrow it down further. Value in my neck of the woods would be @ 400 to 425 with the box and origina paperwork/accessories. HTH

Well, I ended up not getting that one, but I did get a different one. The serial number is: N2708xx. Can someone date this for me please.

From BADSBSNF81:
Since other N frames were SN'd in the same range,

I assume then that the 58 is also an N frame then. The grip seems to be a bit smaller than my 57.

The model 57 and 58 are both N frames, same as the 29. The 58 was available with a four inch barrel, fixed sights, no ejector rod shroud, and was finished in either satin blue or nickel. The stocks were standard Smith & Wesson checkered walnut Magna with monograms. The 58 basically looked like a model 10 heavy barrel or model 13, just larger.
