Revolver Concerns

I want to get a S&W 627 8 shot .357 for winter CCW, truck gun, and home defense sidearm, but I'm concerned that it isn't as practical as, say, a 14 shot .45 Glock 21 or something similar with high capacity.

Can the revolver community here lul me into getting this sweet revolver for the above stated reasons? :D

Get what you want, life is too short. If you can't get'm with 8 shots you ain't gona get'm. I'm a big fan of revolvers.

An N frame .357 wouldn't be my choice for CCW, but whatever floats your boat. Get what you want.

Fear the man who is trained with, and trusts the revolver.

5 shots should handle most legitimate self-defense situations.

15 shots may not handle all legitimate self-defense situations.

Considering that you can buy a very good compact semi-auto for LESS MONEY than you will pay for a very good compact revolver, I'm having a hard time figuring why you would get the revolver unless you just have a "thing" for revolvers.

G26 FTW.

I suffer from multiple magazine disease. If 2 mags are good, the I need to own 10. You don't even want to know how many 1911 and AR mags I have.

That's why I like Revolvers. I don't suffer from multiple speed loader disease.

Also, if you might encounter dangerous game, I'd take 357 mag over most any auto pistol cartridge.

N-frames are big guns; if I could CC one, I would. My 627 PC 8-shot is a beauty. Definitely a great gun for self defense--8 rounds of 357 should be enough, and a speed strip for carrying will allow for reloading if required.

but I'm concerned that it isn't as practical as, say, a 14 shot .45 Glock 21 or something similar with high capacity.

If you have to ask, there isn't anything made with "enough" capacity for you. Get whatever you can find that will hold the most bullets.

if used for all options you listed, I feel a revolver is the better choice period. this is of course my opinion only but I truly do feel this way even though I like revolvers more anyways. I recommend a stainless steel that can weather the elements more even though I again prefer stainless steel revolvers anyways:D

Waiting on leather for my new 627, so I cannot comment on how it carries. But, side-by-side with my 2.5" 686, the 627 is not much bigger; however it sure won't fit in a 686 holster.

A man has to know what he wants - based on who he is and his circumstances.

A few years back there was a movie titled "Joe Versus the Volcano" starring Tom Hanks. To paraphrase - - - In one scene the main character (played by Tom Hanks) goes to buy a suit for an upcoming trip, and the tailor asks "What kind of suit do you want?" Tom answers " I don't know, what kind should I get ?"
The tailor replies "How do I know what kind of suit that you should get ? I don't know your wants, or needs, or your circumstances . . . You have to know who you are. "

This kind of question comes up a lot.

The OP listed applications, not reasons, or specific questions.

The chances of firing a shot in anger for the great majority of us is near none.
The chances of firing a shot in anger and then needing a great deal more shots is again near none.
The chances of not shooting a gun you bought, but don't like, just because of perceived numerical advantages is pretty high.
The chances of becoming proficient with the above gun you don't shoot because you don't really like it are really low.

So basically my take is get the .357 maggie. You will likely have way more fun with it, you will likely shoot it lots, you will likely never have to even think about using it in anger and on the off chance that you do you will likely be way more proficient with it then you would the Glock. People have been comfortable with 8 rounds of .45 for a long time, 8 rounds of .357 magnum is.....well lets just say it's not exactly unarmed.

Yes we can all play the statistics game and yes I agree more is always better in general, better to have and not need blah blah etc. But it is very easy to work one self up from do I need 14 rounds of .45 to hell I really need to have a .308 rifle with me to maybe air support etc..

It has the same capacity and shoots a more powerful cartridge than the 1911 in 45ACP. Who here would feel under-armed with a 1911 on +P 45 ACP loads???

I have a "thing" for revolvers. I enjoy them more than semi autos, and I'd argue that I shoot them better as well. Plus, and this isn't exactly a practical reason, but I just plain like revolvers more than semi autos!

If I didn't care about capacity, I'd get a 686 pre lock and a GP100 and be done with it. But the "internet hype" and several scenarios that have happened in my town with multiple (5 or more) attackers makes me feel like I should have more.

I do have a glock 26. If I CCw'd a revolver I'd have the 10 shot G26 as backup. Maybe that would offset the 6-8 round capacity enough?

Attacks of 5 or more attackers may happen ....but how many of them run, when one gets shot ....might be a factor you're overlooking as well.
----------
You should do what you want ! Shoot and certainly carry the gun you shoot the best / and have the most confidence in - if you choose to carry !

....personally, I don't feel Out-Gunned ...even with a traditional 6 shot revolver like a model 66 (K Frame) 4" .../ if I carry it, I don't carry a speedloader, although I do use them at the range for drills - but no reason not to drop one in your pocket..or speed strips or a pouch that holds 6 or 8 extra rounds ...or whatever....
----------
In semi-autos 1911's are my preferred platform ...8 + 1 rounds are more than enough / so I don't carry an extra mag with that gun either.

I have Sig 226's and other double stack guns ....but I don't carry them - because I shoot my S&W revolvers and my 1911's way better than the Sig 226 platform. Mag capacity is of no concern to me....its "Defense" ...not the Gunfight at the OK Corral ....is my perspective.

as well as if 5 or more attackers are determined to attack/ambush you and they decide not to run how many do you you think you can get before you are overwhelmed even with additional ammo. Heck I would almost think if you are being jumped by 5 or more guys you'd be better off going down with a knife in hand so you can stick/slash anything that comes into range nonstop.

I am a peace loving high drag low speed kind of guy who doesn't envision anything remotely like this happening to me but the reality in my brain is if I have 5 or more determined attackers who press even after I get a few rounds off I am probably looking at a REALLY bad situation that probably isn't gonna necessarily help with just me having more ammo.

This

If you as a single armed person are expecting to be able to hold off 5 armed and determined attackers, you are delusional. Even if you had a belt fed and all they have is baseball bats, it can only point one direction at a time.;)

Get that you will enjoy and practice with and carry.

Remember:

Mindset
Tactics
Skill
Gear

Gear is the least important.

I dunno, I could do ok with a belt fed I think. :D Besides who is going to mug the crazy SOB walking down the street with a red bandana, no shirt and an M60E3. I submit that might just end the fight before it starts. But I digress. :D
