Review: HK 45 Compact Tactical

Here's my recently acquired HK 45 Compact Tactical. This is the V1 model in standard DA/SA with safety and decocker. It ships with (2) 10rd 'elephant foot' magazines. I also picked up one of the standard 8rd magazines for carry and the thread protector which does not ship with the gun.

I have owned the full size HK 45 for about a year and really like it, it's just a bit large for carry. The HK 45 CT is very similar in size to the Glock 19. The elephant foot mags are a bit bulky but they actually feel good when shooting. Recoil is very nice for it's size. I have had many of the other compact 45's on the market. Most recently I was trying the XDM 45 compact. Even though the gun was pretty heavy, the recoil impulse seemed much more substantial than I felt it should have. The HK 45 CT is very soft shooting - just slightly more than the full size version.

The thread protector has a tendancy to come loose so I stuck one of the extra O-rings that comes with the gun just beind the threads so when the thread protector hits it, it sort of 'locks' itself in place. I think you're actually just supposed to remove the thread protector when shooting, but this works for me.

Accuracy has been outstanding. I've already put 300 rounds through it, but even the first magazine was right and and very tight groups right out of the box. Certainly better than I shot the full size version when I first got it. Of course, my experience with the full size version probably helped a lot with shooting the compact well. The balance with the 8rd magazine and the threaded barrel is absolutely perfect.

The gun ships with Meprolight night sights and they're okay. They're very similar in shape and sight picture to the normal 'luminova' sights. I assume this is why they are the default factory night sights. All of my other HK pistols have been retrofitted with Trijicon HD yellows and I really like them. I'm not sure if I'll spend the money to replace these sights or not. Even though they are just 'okay', I still shoot it well.

For a holster, I picked up the Blade-Tech Nano. It's my first Blade-Tech holster and I'm fairly impressed so far. My go-to holster for most of my guns is the Comp-Tac Infidel. I like that the Nano uses very thin kydex. It also provides a nice positive click into place in the holster. The Infidel for my full size HK 45 doesn't have as much of a positive lock in although most of the other models do. I attributed this to the sort of scalloped shape of the HK trigger guard making it more difficult to provide that positive indentation that other guns achieve.

Many people complain about the P2000-style grip. They say that it's too slippery. I can understand that. It is pretty slick, but I actually like that about the gun. Since it's pretty soft shooting, it doesn't feel like it's going to slip out of my hand or anything and its comfortable against the skin. It doesn't necessarily have that same hand-molded feel of the full size HK 45 and P30, but it's very slim and comfortable.

Overall, I think the HK 45 Compact Tactical is going to quickly become one of my favorite carry guns. I've been spending the weekend dry fire practicing working on getting the trigger broken in. Some people complain about the HK triggers, and I would tend to agree with them when speaking on out of the box triggers. A well broken in HK trigger is very nice in my opinion. I actually have a spare Wolff reduced power hammer spring that I may drop in too just to lighten it up a little bit. For the time being though, it feels fine.

I had a friend of mine stipple the backstrap, frontstrap, and side panels where the factory texturing was. Added just enough grip without butchering the frame and I really like it. Of course this was before Talon Grips had options for the pistol and today I'd probably just do those.

The 45 Compact is my favorite HK bar none. I shoot it better than anything I've ever owned and besides some light strikes due to crappy ammo (warning if you're using steel be aware of crap getting blown back into the firing pin channel) it's never skipped a beat. At 2175 rds (yes I have spreadsheets) the trigger is beautiful now. For the size and weight I find it more comfortable than shooting a 1911. I'd sell a lot of guns before I ever sold it.

Thanks TR.

I have considered trying the Talon grips on it. I've seen some pics of some really nice stippling on the 45C that I think would be nice, but we all know how that effects resale value. Of course, I'm not planning on selling it at this point, but who knows what may happen down the road. So Talon Grips will probably be a good option just to see if it feels even better with a bit more grip to it.

Yea agreed. I have two guns with stippling and I did it sort of knowing I was committing myself to them. Talon grips seem like a way to get similar traction without the potential loss in value. The only time I found I needed the extra grip was in the summer when it was very humid, but even just a little bit more grip made all the difference.

I definitely want to pick up a threaded barrel for it one day. I think it'd be pretty sweet with a suppressor.

Nice review! Congrats on the purchase. I really wish I could afford to pick up something during the HK rebate.

I have shot on of these and actually liked it better than the full size model.

Then again, that's not surprising as my favorite handgun is my P2000.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm really liking it. The balance on the gun is just outstanding. I've been planning on sending my P30 in to Gray Guns to have them work their magic, but I may go with this one instead.

Very nice!

I have to say that with all my practical needs covered, poly-framed pistols are a ways down on my to-buy list (since I like to hunt for harder-to-find metal-framed stuff and old revolvers these days), but this damned rebate has got me really tempted to pick something up -- either a P30L in 9mm or a full-size HK45.

Trying to resist for now...

either a P30L in 9mm or a full-size HK45

Both very good choices. I regret selling my P30L and if I can swing it, I hope to pick up another one before the rebate ends. My HK 45 isn't going anywhere either. :)

It seems you're a pretty big fan of Gray Guns' work on HK triggers. That would definitely be a pretty tempting upgrade. The stock triggers are easily the thing that has turned me off the most about HKs.

I guess I could always dry fire whatever I eventually buy a few thousand times to see if that makes enough of a difference -- though I don't think it would for me, as I'm familiar with what a stock broken-in HK trigger feels like. Any idea what the turn-around is for a trigger job is at GG?

Way to go Uncle!
if I was going to buy an HK, that would be the one. It's tough not going for it with their rebate going on. I don't have a good use for the thing though. I prefer smaller 9mm's for carry, and I've got other guns to fill the full sized open carry 45 role with an equal or higher round count.

Besides, I'm saving for other toys right now and buying an HK would slow me down with getting what I really want.

I've never shot one of the HK 45's though, so when I finally do I'll probably be looking back on this rebate as a sorely missed opportunity!

I'm very happy for you uncle!:)

By the way... are you crazy man??? Leave the sights till they burn out! Then you can replace them;)

Congrats on the 45CT and nice pics/review.
My 45C is my all time favorite .45 auto. Light yet soft shooting, much improved ergonomics over the USP series, great accuracy, 100% reliable so far.

Turn around is a bit lengthy. They estimate 12-14 weeks. I don't actually own any guns with Bruce's work yet, but have handled a couple and they are really impressive.

I agree with you. ;)

To me it's not that bad if you do the light FPBS and lighter hammer spring swap. It's no SIG P210 or Colt Gold Cup but nor would I expect it to be. I'd easily put it on par with a stock SIG trigger.

I've been running that very same pistol for a few months now. My experience pretty much mirrors yours. I'm really pleased with the pistol over all, and with the exception of that somewhat slippery grip, it's the perfect concealed carry rig in .45. One could say that it wouldn't be nearly as comfortable to carry without that grip the way it is though. I find that when I carry some of my other HK pistols with the more aggressive grip texture they tend to rub me raw right through my t-shirt.

I have owned my Hk 45C for about a month now, and shot it at the range again tonight. I am still very impressed with it overall.

I have Trijicon night sights installed on it, and will be ordering a Talon rubberized grip for it soon. I personally find the grip a little too slippery for my taste.

I have two of the 10 round "elephant foot" mags and four 8 round mags with the pinky extension. I shoot equally well with both. I find it very easy to shoot one hole groups with the Hk 45C. It is a very accurate shooting pistol. I can do the same with my VP9, but for whatever reason, I don't shoot as well with my P30S as I do the VP9 or 45C.

I handled the full size Hk 45, and I found that I just preferred the size of the 45C over the full size Hk 45. It just seems to fit my hand better.

Uncle Malice, I will tell you that I am a HUGE fan of the rubberized Talon grips. I have installed them on almost every pistol that I have owned, and will be ordering a set for my 3 Hk pistols here shortly. They are awesome!
