Rev. Al Sharpton's driver arrested for allegedly speeding

WAXAHACHIE, Texas The Reverend Al Sharpton's driver is free on bail after sheriff's deputies say he was arrested for driving 110 miles per hour on an Ellis County highway near Waxahachie

Forty-three-year-old Jarrett Barton Maupin of Phoenix was freed on a thousand dollars bail after yesterday's arrest.

An Ellis County sheriff's spokesman says a deputy spotted a car containing Maupin and Sharpton speeding north yesterday afternoon on Interstate 35-E, about 40 miles south of Dallas.

State troopers headed off and stopped the car just west of Waxahachie. Maupin told the troopers he was hurrying to get the New York civil rights activist and two other passengers to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Williams says the car was impounded at the rental agency's request, and Sharpton and the two other passengers were offered a ride to a nearby hotel. They declined and said they'd walk. No word on to where.

Sharpton had been in Crawford earlier in the day to visit with Cindy Sheehan, who's been leading an anti-war vigil near President Bush's Central Texas ranch.

Sharpton's driver arrested after chase

CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Civil rights activist Al Sharpton's driver was arrested in Texas for leading police on a high speed chase for nine miles along an interstate highway.

Jarrett Maupin, 43, was arrested Sunday and charged with one felony count of evading arrest, and the misdemeanor charge of reckless driving, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Maupin was driving Sharpton to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport for a flight to New York after Sharpton visited Iraq War protesters outside President George Bush's Crawford ranch.

Lt. Danny Williams, a spokesman for the Ellis County Sheriff's Office said Maupin was clocked at 110 mph in a 65-mph zone on Interstate 35 about 40 miles south of Dallas.

"The reason he was arrested is that he was weaving in and out of traffic," Williams said. "They couldn't get him to slow down, so we radioed ahead to the state highway patrol.

Asked if Maupin had been speeding, Sharpton told the newspaper: "I don't know."

Maupin was freed on $1,000 bail.

Apparently when the Trooper offered to give Sharpton a ride he blew up and indignatly told him that he had done nothing wrong and he would NEVER ride in a police car if he didn't have to.

Sharpon was later quoted as saying: "Speeding? What's speeding?" and then, "What's a speedometer?"
