I declared this year the "year of the iron sights" and declared that when I rifle hunted, I would ONLY carry rifles wearing irons. That was great idea, but I got a wake up call on 50+ year old eyes and dim light. I also hunted the WMA, which has a "point count law" (three to a side to be legal) on deer, and obviously, the 'scope was an assest.

So I hunted a rifle some wearing a low powered Leupold variable and get ready....a German #1 reticle. The big, 3 posted rascal, and love it. Visible under all light conditions, and for the 100 yds =/- ranges I am shooting, precise enough. Never mind I missed a buck...twice....running, but that's another story!

Anybody else hunt odd reticles, other than the std duplex, and why?

I have sent back every Leopold I've picked up for their CPC - converging post and crosshair - reticule.

Lets me center up with no conscious effort in dim conditions without blocking any extra light.

Just works for me. JT

Most of mine are P-4 with lower half range finding. Two dedicated hunting rifles (336C & 7600) are standard duplex. The rest are Mil-Dot.

"3 to a side"

That is a rule or regulation that requires any buck killed must have at least "3 points on one side" or antler. If he's balanced, the buck would be a 6 pt by eastern count. or a 3 x 3 western (I guess). The rule is intended to limit the taking of young bucks and enhance the QDM (quality deer mgmt) Program on this particular wildlife mgmt area. A scope lets you count points a bit easier to see if the buck you have under the gun is legal.

Because I had to look it up and assume a few others might also. I like the German reticles... in Medal of Honor.

Should have realized that...a P4 is a German #4, or 4A in your images.
Manufactures use different codes. Leupold is German #4.

Love my GAP reticle, because i can spot shots with it being FFP and have a semi accurate idea of how i need to adjust in Mils for windage or elevation. Also with it being FFP my measurements don't change regardless of magnification so if i need to back off to 10x 20minutes after sunset to gather light but still need to use my reticle i can do so
