Results of a couple range sessions

Decided I wanted to get an apples to apples comparison between some of my handguns, including an LCR, so I opted to compare 10yd targets.

Shot 100rds, from a Weaver stance, from each handgun in the comparison except the LCR (had been shooting with it prior to making the decision, and at that point another 50 were all I could handle; recoil isn't too bad, but after a while -IE 100 or 150 rds - my trigger finger starts to chafe and even blister).

Handguns used were a Ruger LCR and a SIG P229 (with the .40 barrel installed) last Sunday, and a CZ75D PCR compact 9mm and a S&W Model 18 .22LR this morning.

After the ten yard targets, goofed around at closer ranges just to play with the toys a bit, and burn up the remaining ammo.

Results of the 10 yd comparison:

Just playing around and burning ammo:

All did well enough; they are all probably capable of better shooting than mine. But given that I shot the PCR for the first time today, I think it's going to become my favorite, alongside the CZ75B Omega (and of course my Model 18 - had that little revolver since I was 15).

You're welcome sir, I appreciate your posts and can't wait for photos.

FWIW your blog link worked for me and did not require a password or anything... it's just more convenient when the pics are right there...

CZs

I was a die-hard SIG fan for 14 years or so, but have recently started shifting my preference to CZ.

Although I still love my P220...

Cheers,

M

Comparing an LCR to a S&W Combat Masterpiece? That's harsh, even by my standards.

I wasn't prepared to like the LCR (I don't care for little guns), but Ruger's done a nice job with it.

Harsh, maybe...

... but I also felt like burning a lot of rounds, so the Model 18 was along for the ride, anyway.

Inexpensive to feed, and fun to shoot.

Haven't had my hands on a Model 15 since AOCS, a couple decades ago. Those were nice shooters, too. Hard to go wrong with a Combat Masterpiece in any caliber.

BTW, if I had really wanted to be harsh, I'd have gone to 25yds for the comparison. Cheers, M.

The LCR disapoints me. You certainly shot tighter groups with the heavier pistols. Was this the result of recoil, grip size/shape, just the handgun ??

I'm interested in how the LCR compares to the S&W 442, and/or 340. Have you ever shot either ?

A couple of factors are in play, here

1) The other bullets had 100 rounds in the group, whereas the LCR had 50. The group would have filled in and looked more solid with twice the ammo fired, and I doubt the edges would have moved out too much more.

2) However, i only fired 50 because I'd already been doing some shooting with the LCR prior to deciding on the 10 yard comparison. It's a good little gun, but it's light, and my little finger sits below the grip when I shoot it, so it rises more than my other handguns. Between that and the curvature of the trigger, my trigger finger gets hooked more by the LCR in the recoil phase than by any of my other handguns, and my finger starts chafing and/or blistering around the 75-100rd mark.

3) The LCR sights aren't bad for a snubby with a channel rear, but they don't compare to the target sights on the S&W Model 18, the Mepros on the SIG or the three-dots on the CZ.

4) The heavier relative recoil of the LCR probably also impacts my ability to focus on the front sight as I do with my other handguns. This is probably true of all lightweight snubbies, though.

In answer to your question, I've tried my friend's 640, but haven't shot it enough to objectively compare it to the LCR. From what little experience I have had, I prefer the LCR trigger, but that's all I could say at this point.

Truth be told, I'm not huge, but at 6/220 I'm large enough to hide a 9mm compact or a 4"GP or L-frame with the use of an outer shirt, so I don't focus as much on shooting snubbies as I might. I usually carry the snubby either as a backup to a bigger revolver, or as a primary if I'm in really lightweight clothing, say board shorts and a tank.

I've shot all three. The Ruger was a hair less accurate for me, but I've been shooting J-Frames for a long time. I only put a box of ammo through the Ruger.

This was slow fire, with mild loads. I put a bit of orange paint on the front sight to make it easier to pick up:

Better than I'd expect, and pretty much on par with a S&W. It's got a good trigger. Recoil is more pronounced than the 442, but less than the 340, which makes sense, as the Ruger is between the two in weight.

Ruger did include grips that cover the backstrap and have "puffy" rubber where the webbing of the hand rests. Without those, I imagine recoil would have been snappier.

Tom Servo...

... nice shooting, but no surprise there. Was curious, though - does your little finger also hang under the grip, or do you get some purchase with it?
