A 35 year-old English computer programmer on a business trip to Chicago tipped an attractive cocktail waitress $10,000 at the up-market Leg Room Club. After buying a round of drinks for only $9, he tipped waitress Melanie Uczen $10,000 using his credit card and allegedly asked her if she would join him for breakfast the next day as he thought she was "wonderful".
On his return to the UK, Mr David Nicholas discovered that his tip was now an international news story, and, what was worse, lawyers representing the club were demanding an additional payment as his credit card limit did not cover the full $10,000. Mr.Nicholas stated "To be honest I'm amazed anyone took it seriously in the first place. It's the sort of thing that must happen in bars all the time when someone has had one too many drinks". In spite of being visibly drunk at the time, the club made Mr.Nicholas sign a note stating that he would pay all the money promised and even took a photocopy of his passport. Lawyers representing the club were today said to have backed down over the matter. A la Carte Enterprises Inc., owner of Leg Room issued a statement indicating that the free publicity more than compensated for the debt, they also added that the club would be giving Miss Uczen the $10,000 themselves.
