I sent a letter to each of my Senators and my Representative. Although their voting records have been well above average, I felt the need to encourage them to be even more aggressive. Here's a shortened version of the response from one Senator. They were all similar, but not as detailed.
"I have consistently been a supporter of individual rights of gun ownership. I firmly believe in the Second Amendment to the Constitution which enables citizens to keep and bear arms. It is important to me that each person is able to protect his or her home and family. Additionally, many Americans, including myself, enjoy hunting and should not be denied the right to do so.
While I understand the concerns raised by recent acts involving firearms, more gun control is not the answer to reducing gun-related crime. Tather, I support strict criminal justice measures such as mandatory sentencing for anyone using or carrying a firearm in the commission of a violent crime and the death penalty in drug-related killings.
Throughout Senate consideration of anti-crime and anti-drug packages, I will continue to work to ensure that those who commit crimes are the ones punished, not law-abiding gun owners.
Thank you for taking the time to share your views with me on this issue. Rest assured, I will keep your thoughts in mind when crime legislation comes before the Senate."
Don Nickles
U.S. Senator
I think all gun owning Okies stand behind this man, I know I will continue to do so.
I also read that (R) Tom Coburn, an avid Oklahoma pro-second ammendment defender is leaving the U.S. House. However, he is being replaced with another(whose name escapes me) very pro-gun supporter. In fact, I read he was raffling off guns to raise campaign funds. What a guy!
