Below is a response to the recent comments I received from you:

Dear Mr. ron8903 (omitted real name)

Thank you for contacting me regarding the semiautomatic weapons ban. I appreciate hearing from you and would like to respond to your concerns.

When our Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution, they included the Second Amendment to guarantee people the right to keep and bear arms. This is a fundamental part of our American identity, and I will work with my Senate colleagues to ensure that this liberty is protected for all law-abiding citizens.

On February 13, 2007, Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) introduced the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022). This legislation would reauthorize for ten years the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, which prohibits the manufacture, transfer, or possession of a semiautomatic assault weapon or a large capacity ammunition feeding device. H.R. 1022 has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, where it awaits further approval.

Although no similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate, I will keep your thoughts in mind as we proceed in the 110th Congress.

Again, thank you for sharing your views with me. If you have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. In addition, for more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov.

Sincerely,

Mel Martinez
United States Senator

Glad he's on my side.

Well, that actually made me smile. I think you have someone in office who may be worth a lil something. But lets not start counting the chickens before they hatch just yet!

I don't know what makes you guys think he's on our side. He noted the existence of the Second Amendment, stated what HR1022 does, and then said he would "keep in mind" the letter-writer's opinion in the Congressional season. A true politician, he related no opinion on HR1022 or any other gun legislation.

Ron,

I got a similar response from Senator Martinez. I have not heard back from our Dhimmicrat socialist Senator Nelson yet. Maybe I should not have called him an anti American, anti Western Culture global communist. :)

I received the same impression as TimRB and sasquatch.

Solely from the letter, you cannot discern where Martinez stands on this issue. I believe these “cookie cutter” responses are designed this way on purpose.

Best write back and ask for specifics regarding the Senator’s stance, rather than allowing them to believe this non-response is sufficient.

When I write a politician, not only do I urge them to go one way or the other on an issue, but I also ask them to respond letting me know where they stand on the issue. Sometimes I get a real response, other times it’s like this letter; a generic response that is so ambiguous it could be sent to someone on either side of the issue with out damage.

I must have missed the part where he said he opposes 1022.

Yeah, that'd be because it wasn't in there. ;)

Went ahead and wrote my Rep, too. I'm confident he'll vote the right way, but still doesn't hurt.

And remember, just because your politician doesn't say he opposes it doesn't mean he supports it. Just means he's slippery, as politicians tend to be. His goal in life is to make sure as many people as possible think he agrees with them, regardless of whether he does. The important part is that you've let him know that you disagree with it, and if enough people do this it might have some tiny amount of influence on his decision.

Yeah, I'm a bit cynical.
