Resource for S&W history, specs, etc.

I have asked for serial # help on several occasions, and responses from those in the know have always been prompt. Since I seem to be gravitating toward Smiths in a substantial manner, I think I should have my own copy of whatever that resource is. For example, during the past year, I picked up pristine model 10's- a 10-6 and a 10-8. I would like to know exactly what those changes were all about... Is there a single source for such information? Thanks for any advice..

Yes, it's called the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Rick Nahaus and Jim Supica.

You can find it in most major bookstores, at Amazon, or occasionally at Overstock.com

While Mike is right, the SCSW doesn't cover certain details. For example, I don't think there's SN tables for those 2 model 10s you mention. And while the book breaks down the dash changes, like 10-5, it doesn't offer a year that they were started. There's other S&W books out there as well but if I could have one, it would be the SCSW 3rd ed. Also consider the S&W forum. Tons of great info:

Another great book on S&W, if you can find it, is Smith & Wesson, 1857-1945, by Neal and Jinks.

As you can see, it covers only the older guns and is a complement to, not a substitute for, the SCSW.

genepix- might be offbase here, but thought I would add

one of the TFL members gave me advice one time(or I used the advice given to another member on another thread) about contacting jinks. fill out the info on the sheet(link) I provided and you can mail 50bucks to get a letter of authenticity and a history of the weapon you own(history of that type of weapon and a specific history on your exact weapon like when and where it was shipped to its seller's/store's location, manufacture date, etc).

mine was a full two pages of letters on official letterhead just to put with my archives:
