"SAN YSIDRO(San Diego)- A Sunset Lane resident used his handgun to whack a burglary suspect on the head yesterday and accidentally fired a round into his bedroom wall, police said.
The teen-age suspect suffered a fractured skull and was hospitalized, police said.
Neighbors reported hearing a gunshot from an apartment on Sunset Lane near West San Ysidro Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m. The tenant was holding a boy, about 16, at gunpoint when officers arrived.
The tenant told police two young men, who are acquainted with his daughter, had crawled in through his bedroom window. He drew his semiautomatic handgun, but one youth kicked it, causing the magazine to fall out.
He hit the boy on the head with the weapon and unitentionally fired a round still in the chamber, police said. The round hit the wall, scaring off the other youth, who was thought to be about 18 or 19."

This reminds me of a story that a dear friend of my family told me when I was contemplating becoming a member of the NYPD.
This gentleman retired from the NYPD in the early 70's as Detective Lt.

This took place to one of his plainclothes officers during a narcotics bust. The officer was confronted with a perp who was just a scared 15 yr old kid cornered in the back room of a crappy little apartment in Spanish Harlem.

The perp had a gun and between crying, and pissing himself, he couldn't make up his mind if he should shoot or not. John took advantage of this kids hesitaiton and quickly entered the room and before the kid could do anything he pistol whipped him.

Now the rest of the story......

They had found some major weight in Heroin in the other bedroom, along with the senior members of the gang moving the junk. This kid was a nobody, and was there because his "friend" got him involved as a courier.
It was better $$ than he could ever hope to make where he was, and he never really pushed on the street.

Instead of shooting a cornered armed agitated "felon", John saved the kids life, the little pissant grew up to be Doctor. :)

The sick thing is that even though John took pity on the kid and coldcocked him instead of killing him, he was accused of police brutality and was forced to undergo long investigation by IAB and damn near lost his job. (this was the time of the Knapp commision and to IAB EVERY plainclothes cop was dirty).

Just an little story about how the most compasionate of acts can be twisted into somthing craven and evil by people with a agenda.

and people say I'm cynical :(

Just desserts. Break into a man's home and take the risk of getting hurt. Gee, the thumping doesn't count towards "gun violence" does it?

What would have happened media-wise if the burglar got whopped with a
baseball bat?

Ban all baseball bats? :)
