Researching M1 Carbine

Good day to you all. My father has an M1 Carbine with a serial number of 0001 . Some people I have talked to stated that this is a prototype number used at the factory or in production modelling . As far as we know this was the last M1 carbine to be made. If anyone would have more information or be able to stear me in a direction it would be much appreicated. Thank you for you time.

Take it to Harley Nolden's Institute for Firearms Research. It's a sub board of TFL. If he can't help you, I doubt that no-one can! :D

Is it marked Inland #1 or Winchester?

Winchester #1 & #2 were toolroom handmade guns. They are distinct from production models and #2 had no serial #. I don't think Winchester #1 had a serial # stamped on it either. Winchester's first guns began with ser#1,000,001 (1000001).

Inland was assigned #1 and is depicted on page 47 of Larry Ruth's seminal study of the M1 Carbine, War Baby!. It should have the early flip type "L" sight, no bayonet lug, and should also have "1" stamped on its stock. It was made for Inland by R.F. Sedgley, Inc.

How 'bout this for a WAG -- possibly a lunchbox special, "custom numbered" by the moonlighting worker who gathered the parts and put them together?

Possible. My uncle (dec.) milled off the serial # on a M1 Garand once. After he brought it home, it was stolen! Thieves shouldn't cry over stolen loot. I also wonder how much it weakened the receiver.
