I would appreciate manufacturing date and any other information that could be provided about a S&W 586 .357 with round butt and 6 inch barrel, SN BDF8XXX.

Thanks in advance.

I don't find a "BDF" prefix listed. Please check the serial number again. Also look for a dash number after the model. Could be anything from "no dash" to 586-5.

OF,

Thanks for your reply.

This particular gun has **Special** on the factory label on the box. I think this is due to the 6 inch barrel/round butt combination. I know that the fellow that I bought it from mentioned some strong collector interest until they found out that it had been fired.

I will re-check the serial and model numbers, but am almost positive that the prefix is BDF, and get back to you.

The label on the box should have a Product Code number (I presume the box is original to the gun). Do any of the following numbers show up?

103499, 103494, 103504, 103505, 103506, 103507, 103508, 103514, 103515, 103516, 103526, 103535, 103536, 103537, 103542, 103543, 103545, 103592

Remenber these are Product Codes, not serial numbers. In any case some Product Code should be on the label.

OF,

The box is original to the gun, as far as I know.

I will check on the product code and get back to you.

OF,

Model 586, Caliber .357

Thanks for your help,

Any ideas about the unusual 6 inch barrel/round butt configuration, and the **Special** designation on the box.

Just wondering if anyone knows who placed the special order.

Lew Horton?, Bill Hicks?, ???

On the Product Code we seem to be missing a number. Usually Product Codes are 6-digits. However Product Code Number 103545 is listed as : 6"-RR (Red Front Sight) WO (White Outlined Rear Sight) /Pachmayr Grip.

I still don't find a "BDF or SBDF" serial number prefix. They did use "BBF" in 1988.

Nothing like this shows up in the list of Lew Horton Specials or Performance Center Guns. S&W made far more "specials" on the 686 platform then the 586.

Since nothing seems to add up I would send a check in the amount of $35.00 and made out to S&W, to: Smith & Wesson, PO Box 2208, Springfield, MA 01102, Attn: Mr. Roy Jinks. Include a letter describing the revolver and a picture - the one you posted should be O.K. Be sure to take the serial number off the gun, not the label. It is stamped on the frame, inside the yoke cut, under the barrel. You can see it after you swing out the cylinder.

Either we aren't seeing the whole picture, or so few guns were made on this "special order" that nobody bothered to list it. Anyway, Roy - who is a great guy - has access to the company records and he'll nail it down, and send you written proof.

You could also post a inquire on the Smith & Wesson Forum and see if anyone there knows about it.

What serial number reference are you using, Fluff?

I'm using Supica & Nahaus.

According to their 1st edition, October 1988 started at BBT 2293, and July 1990 started around BFL 1101...

What I'm guessing, though, is that this was the tail end of a special order done for some off-shore police agency. There have been quite a few 586s so made.

The special order number is your key to getting information from Smith & Wesson.

Mike and Old Fuff,

Thanks for your time and information.

The serial number on box and gun match and the prefix is BDF.

The product code is indeed 103545.

Spec. Ord. is 4528 4268

The gun is a Model 586-3.

I probably will ask Roy since this may be a rather rare instance of the 586.

Again Thanks,

Red
