I am looking to start buying bulk .223, 9mm, and .40 s&w ammunition. I live in a apt, so reloading is not really an option, and buying from my local gun store/ academy is becoming very expensive. Any suggestions to as where I might be able to find some cheaper ammunition online?

Reloading is always an option... I started reloading while still living at home, stored everything in various size plastic buckets. Put everything away before my parents came home from work. They didn't have a clue!:D

Try Grafs, Natchez and Midway to start.

Need more choices? Why not do a SEARCH?

Reloading is always an option. I have a rifle reloading setup I when I'm traveling and staying in hotels. Everything is in a 20" toolbox. An old buddy of mine had a progressive press he clamped on his workbench once a year to load 9mm. You could just as easily clamp it on a kitchen table and put it in the closet when you're done.

Thanks for the input guys, now that I have some good websites to buy from, my only other question is if steel cased ammo is bad for just going through the motions at the range. I've shot some silver bear and Tula in the past through my AR, but I was told by a marine that it is bad stuff and shouldn't be used. My thinking is that, yes, steel on steel contact is generally bad. However, steel casings are much thinner than the inner mechanisms of firearms (extractors), and will probably not have much of an impact on the longevity of my firearm (if it is maintained and oiled properly). Never the less, I would greatly appreciate any opinions on the matter.

There are several good venders out there,,,

One that I have had good experience with is SGAMMO.com

I've made three orders from them and everything got to me on-time and was exactly what I ordered.

Good luck

Bear ammo is ok for target / practice, I recommend cleaning your firearm after each session if you do choose to use it. I also do not recommend keeping any in the Firearms long term. But my personal recommendation is Freedom Ammo. I have shoot 4000+ rounds of Freedom Ammunition with no issues whatsoever.

I've used MidwayUSA and cheaperthandirt for most of my ammo purchases and both are very good for ammo. MidwayUSA is cheaper in small amounts because their shipping is cheaper but cheaperthandirt is usually cheaper when you buy in bulk.

+1 for Cheaper than Dirt. I've purchased 5.56/223 Ammo for less than $.30 a round for a bulk purchase. At that price, for me, it's better to buy than to reload.

I have purchased bulk ammo from the following with good results (in no particular order):

Georgia Arms
SG Ammo
Ammunition to Go
Underwood Ammo

Georgia Arms and Ammunition To Go are the two I've used in the past and never had any problems. But if you're buying in bulk, you should really consider reloading. Paying the additional cost for shipping and hazmat fees on the bulk order were enough to make me invest in a decent reloading setup.

Is a hazmat fee on ground shipping of ammunition something new? It's been several years since I bought ammo online but the invoice on the last order didn't show a hazmat fee.

I know it's mandatory if you're using air a your shipping method. I dont know about ground. You have to pay hazmat fees for shipping powder and primers by ground though. Pretty certain of that.

If you have the room to store "bulk" ammo purchases, then you have the room to reload

but then "bulk" means something different to everyone

For ME, bulk 22 is 2-3 cases, each case is 6250 rounds
bulk shotgun ammo is 100 flats, that is 25,000 rounds
bulk pistol is a minimum of 2500 for each cartridge

the space this takes up isn't THAT large, but it is large enough that reloading equipment could be used

I can second or third SG Ammo, sgammo.com. Prices good, ships quickly, and quality is good.

Also to to ammoengine.com, it's a search engine for best deals by caliber. I got the best deal on the Romanian 8mm when it was around....
