Whatever happened to those firebreathers who wanted smaller government, surplus in the budget and other things in thier "Contract with America" They said they wanted to be different from the Democrats. I loved those firebreathers during the Waco hearings....

Has the Republican Party suffered the same fate as the Democrats? They envisoned citizen-represenatives not career politicians interested in self preservation and personal power. :(

I loved those guys.........

The fire died with Ronald Reagan... :(

The greatest mercy is that he didn't live long enough to see his Republican party die such a humiliating death... :( :(

I think it died long before President Reagan did. It has been dying a slow, agonizing death for at least the last 10 years. Sadly enough, today there's not much difference between Republicans and Democrats - seems like with either, we're going to be screwed, blued and tatooed.

A couple of relevant thoughts from other posters:

In truth the '94 Republicans never existed to begin with. They just told you what you wanted to hear in order to get into office.
 
Politicians owe their existance to the big business and fat cats that fill their election coffers and to the special interest groups whose votes they pander for.

Their principal interest is to protect and expand their privileged lives and not to concientiously serve the needs of their constituents.

Don't waste their time unless you have money to contribute or you are a member of a minority interest group. Middle-class Americans need not apply.

I am sure some did, but I was watching some of the Waco hearings...most of these guys were rabid on the issue of individual rights and big government. They were taking Mr. Schumer to task..and the ATF, FBI...ect.
 
Absolutely, but that had more to do with partisan politics than Libertarianism. Take note tho': The only time your rights as a citizen are safe is when both parties are too busy attacking each other to attack you. Checks 'n' balances ;)

The AWB is what got the Republicans into power, Clinton even admitted it. Pelosi and Boxer as well as some others got into the gun ban and confiscation mood a little too much for many Americans.
