This weekend I finally obtained my long-desired Steyr M40, and I offer these brief observations as supplements to the excellent material already posted here.
1. The SN of my gun is 32xx, and the gun displayed no ejection problems like those mentioned earlier. The gun fired around 300 rounds of various handloaded and factory ammo with 180 and 200 grain cast and jacketed bullets, and experienced absolutely no failures of any kind. It fed reliably some 200-gr handloads that would not feed in an STI race gun. I know 300 rounds is not an adequate test, but it's an impressive start. More next weekend.
2. Also at the range the same time as the M40 was an S&W Sigma, and we carefully compared overall dimensions of the two guns. The Sigma barrel is slightly longer, but I am convinced that a holster for the Sigma will fit the M40 very well in all other regards. If you're using a belt slide or other style holster in which barrel length doesn't matter, I believe a Sigma holster will fit the M40 perfectly.
3. All other rave reviews about this gun are, IMO, entirely justified. This gun is simply outstanding in all respects. After two days, it is already a serious contender for the position of favorite handgun in my collection. It will almost certainly become my CC gun after some more practice sessions.
