I just returned from the Boise, Idaho SAS-AIMM March. It was great.
We met at the corner of Front and Capitol Streets at 2 PM. We had between about three hundred people there and almost all of it was word of mouth.
The Idaho coordinator for SAS-AIMM was in DC, but her husband (I believe it was) and some others who had helped were there organizing. Mr. Mansfield, the gentleman running for Helen Chenowith's spot in Congress was there and in full support. I spoke to him for a few moments and found his attitudes refreshing and his position on the 2nd amendment, abortion, property rights and overburdensome government something I can fully support.
We had many posters (my son and I had a US Flag) and we were given a lot of support from passing motorists as we prepared to march to the State Capitol. We had a couple of the departing MOM's (who had numbered 300-400 apparently) give us a little hassle and non-supportive comments and gestures, but by a huge margin, those passing were very supportive when they saw the signs. Idaho is a pretty big 2nd amendment state. No ID Card, no hassles.
The local channels, who had covered the earlier March, were there in force and gave us good coverage. My son (BJ, who is 10 years old and who attended the "March for Liberty" with us last October in DC) was interviewed along with myself. They asked me why I would support guns if the safety of my son was my prime consideration. I replied, "because the saftey of my son, and his life and liberty are my primary concern". We were interviewed for a good five minutes adn at one point I explined that if a criminal broke into my house and I had a choice between 911 and my .44 Magnum, I would pick the firearm every time. In addition, I explained, the 2nd amendment is not only for our prtection against common, individual criminals, it's main purpose was to afeguard against institutional criminalityin the form of an increaingly encroaching and tyranical government.
At 2:30 PM we marched the 6-8 blocks to the Capitol buiding.
As we marched, spontaneously and led by one of the organizers, we began shouting "Support the 2nd Amendment". We were split, abotu 150 or so on one side of Capitol and the other 100-150 on the other. The yess changed to "Support the Constitution" and then spontaneously we began alternating between sides of the street, Our side would shout, "Support the Constitution" and the other side of the street would respond back with, "Defend the 2nd Amendment!".
It was great! We did this, very loudly all the way to the Capitol steps, and then the chant continued on the Capitol steps for a good 5-10 minutes. Very rousing. The news covered us the whole way. One reporter from the Idaho Statesman, who had interviewed me at the Keyes rally last week (and quoted me in his article the next day), walked along with us. Apparently, our March was a much more rousing thing to cover and provided better "News" in Idaho. Of course, this is Idaho folks, where the Democratic caucuses a few weeks ago, drew all of 366 voters ... in the whole state!
The speeches were GREAT! Letters were read from the Idaho Coordinator, and BIG support letters from the entire Conressional delegation ... both Senators and both Congressmen, who applauded this counter march and gave their full support. In fact, in what must have been a REAL slap in the face to the MOM's ... the governor made a staewide, official procalamation where-in he declared March 14, 2000 Idaho's official "2nd Amendment Day". Here are the words from that Procalamation, which was read by the organizers from the microphone today :
WHEREAS, Idaho recognizes the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States as individual rights granted to all citizens of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Idaho recognizes the right of all citizens residing in Idaho the right to keep and bear arms as granted in the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and Article I, Section 11 of the Constitution of the State of Idaho; and
WHEREAS, the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is a guarantor of all individual rights without which other individual rights are jeopardized; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DIRK KEMPTHORNE, Governor of the State of Idaho, do hereby proclaim May 14, 2000, to be SECOND AMENDMENT DAY.
Idaho, where God, guts and guns still keep us free!
