Replacing the followers in after-market mags

I have heard all the negative hype about USA Mags and ProMags and was wondering--has anyone tried to change the followers in the USA Mags and replace them with genuine Ruger followers to make them more reliable? Will they fit? Do they need any modification? And what about the spring? Comments would be appreciated!! Thanks.

Not those specifically. I have looked at the Mecgar and Taurus mags. The Mecgar followers are different for higher capacity. They fit and work, with stock taurus folowers, but you lose 2 rds.

I don't know about the USA mags, but I have modified several Pro-mags. The Ruger followers are wider than the stock junky followers in the Pro-mags. Just take an equal amount off of each side until they fit perfectly. Also at the bottom of the Pro-mags, there is a "pushed in" stamping which will catch the follower and sometimes make it impossible to load the 15th round. Grind this flush on the inside with a dremel tool, and you will have some excellent functioning mags.

YOU DID IT??? I tried that with promags and found the follower was not of the right shape with the feed lips...how much did you have to take off???

I tried this with my Beretta 92F mag follower and USA mag body. I used the Beretta 10 round follower and springs and it would not work. It will load 15 rounds but it will feed only the first 12 rounds. The follwer would not come up to the top of the mag body so last 3 rounds would not feed.

IZZY, Your correct, the Pro-mags have a sharper taper at the top compared to the Ruger OEM mags. I took off a few thousands of an inch on each side. When you get done, you should have the same amount of space between the follower and the lips as on the origional. It takes a while to get it just right.

Really taco?? I very recently purchased a large quantity of Beretta92 factory 10 rounders($8 each) and two hi-cap factories($40 each). I swapped out the springs on both high caps and they both function perfectly.....

zman,

Take plateshooter's advice on the Pro-Mags. I have done the same thing with mine and they work flawlessly. Try using an exacto knife to shave the sides of the followers. I use Ruger springs in all of my Pro-Mags.

However, I am extremely dissatisfied with the USA mags for my P-95. The metal floorplate tends to fly off when a partially loaded mag is swiftly seated into the gun.

Another advantage to the Pro-Mags is that you can buy 15 rounders cheaper than you can buy 10 round Ruger mags.
