Replacing cartridge guide spring on M&G Mod 20?

Hello

I recently took my old Marlin and Glenfield Model 20 bolt action out of the safe in order to refinish the stock and I noticed that the cartridge guide spring was broken and the bolt would not close.

I just order a couple replacement cartridge guide springs, but I'm not sure if I will have to remove the barrel or if I can just pop the broken spring out and pop in the new one. It was my first gun and I hate the fact of having any gun that doesn't function, but I'd really like to avoid having to send it to a smith if I can do it myself.

TIA

IIRC, that spring has a sort of "barb" bend in it to keep it in place, and mostly the exposed end breaks off leaving the bend part still in. Again, IIRC, if the old spring is completely out you can just push the new one in and it snaps in place, BUT you could break it doing that.

I think it might be best to remove the barrel, which is no big deal. Just drive out the retaining cross pin, and use a wood block to drive off the receiver.

Sorry, it seems I spoke too soon. Is there a trick to removing the retaining pin? I tried tapping it out with a punch, but the thing won't budge. The pin seems to have a smaller and larger end, but trying to drive it out isn't working. Hmmm.

Again, TIA

It probably comes out left to right, but that is just because it was put in the opposite way. IIRC, it is not tapered. There is no secret, just a good copper jaw vise, a good punch, and a bigger hammer.
