Replacement 1911 barrels?

I need a new barrel for my offshore 1911. Anyone know which of the after market drop-in .45 barrel kits has the best combination of accuracy, feeding reliability, and least hassling to install? Would I be better off ordering a barrel kit directly from the maker, rather than from an outfit like Brownell's?

At present, I'm leaning towards a Kart barrel kit from Brownell's. I tried ordering a barrel from Bar-Sto, but they never responded to an email query I send them last week--oh well.

The last 1911 I owned I had good luck with the Kart barrel. It was a gunsmith fitted Kart however and I don't know about their drop in barrel.

I needed a new barrel on my para 45. Actually a para p14 frame and colt series 80 slide/barrel. After looking at everyones product, i settled on the Ed Brown barrel. Quality is second to none and the company is a good place to deal with. Prices range from $159-$180. Accurracy is excellent and reliability so far (5,000 rnds) has been flawless.

Compromise is not an option

Got a kart ez fit for my 1911. What a great barrel. VERY satisfied and easy to fit yourself. Comes with all the tools and jigs needed. Very rewarding feeling to do it yourself or have your smith do it. About an hour to do. Have some fun and learn something to.

Thanks guys,

Anyone have experience with Wilson barrels? I just did a little research, and it sounds like their drop in barrels actually do drop in without the need to wack off metal.

Kart is a great choice if you want to do it yourself. They have a kit that includes all the tools and instruction necessary to fit their barrel to your 1911. If you go with this kit and use it properly you should get better performance than any drop in kit.

If you don't mind having someone else do a barrel job, Bar-Sto is a good choice.

I too am on the Fred Kart bandwagon...I have drop in Wilson barrels in two Colts--both were an easy fit requiring only a small amount of material removal in the hood area(rearward)...excellent accuracy & feeding.Regards.

Brownells for the kart barrel. I want to say $155 including the tool kit. Can get it on line I think.

By "barrel kit" I was meaning a barrel that comes with a bushing, link, and link pin; not a tool kit for installing the barrel:0 The only problem I had with Bar-Sto is that I emailed them (5 working days ago) for availability and a shipping price--just like their website advises--and they never got back to me.

Thanks for the info 1911Heaven. BTW are you with the 1911 Heaven firm in Chandler, AZ?

i to am looking for the same thing a barrel with a bushing that drops in and can give 2,5 or less at 25 yards, let me know if you find it 2 inches would be better, thanks, keith

Nothing wrong with BarSto, I have one, but the chamber was match tight and had to be reamed for reliability.

I had an early Kimber classic with a tight chambered barrel. When I got another Kimber (Gold Match - sweet), I decided rather than sell the classic, to fool with it. I had a ramped (I know - bad karma) Schuemann bull barrel mounted to the old classic and it is now my favorite 45! Really sweet shooter, and with an Optima 2000 it groups as well as the Gold Match. (That probably has as much to do with my old eyes and iron sights as anything.)

Any of the top barrels will give superb accuracy if properly fitted. Bar-Sto is arguably the best in existence (the accuracy of my Delta Elite seems to bear that out), but Bar-Sto, Kart, Ed Brown, Schuemann and Nowlin are probalby all too close to call when properly fitted. Did I mention the barrel has to be properly fitted or it is all a waste of time? :D

Drop-in barrel kits are either unlikely to drop in or unlikely to provide that much of an accuracy improvement in my experience. Bar-Sto is an exception, because their drop-in barrels don't drop in. So there is really no point to use them when you can just go straight to the oversized Match Target for the same price. Then again, because their drop-in barrels don't, they work about exactly as well as the Match Target barrels anyway... :p

Having owned all of the barrels mentioned earlier in the thread, I have now standardized on Schuemann. Unlike the other manufacturers, they only make barrels for 1911 and the high end manufacturers like SV, STI and Caspian use their barrels as standard equipment. http://www.schuemann.com/

drop in bbl kit

I have had good results with Storm Lake Machine's kit. Comes with bushing, and link and does drop in. Got mine direct but can be had from Brownells.
