Repairing scratches/gouges

I have an old .410 Stevens single barrel. I foolishly tried several years ago to drive out a hingepin with a totally wrong tool, a center punch. Punch slipped and made several bad gouges/scratches. Can a gunsmith fix this kind of damage? Any estimates of price?

Yes, but it would cost more than the gun is worth.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. When better times come, I may still do it. This is a gun given to my brother by our uncle, engraved with a hunting dog in the field. My brother gave it to me as he doesn't like guns. I've told him and his kids thought, that I still have it if one of them wants it in the future. I'd hate to hand it over with that kind of damage.

The only way to repair it is to remove the scratches

Draw filing.............followed by a good polishing.

Nothing beats a good belt sander after Draw Filing. Start our with course grit and work your way down to about 2000 grit, depending on how you want the fininsh.

Remember after you throw the gun in the bluing tanks, the new bluing will maginify any scratches or imperfections you left.

With a little care and effert a belt sander will put a mirro finish on a piece of gun metal.

Or you can fill in the scratches and paint the gun.
I use milli-put and Dura-fill followed by Dura-coat.
