Rented a Ruger P95D on Saturday.....

I was impressed.
From the serial number, the gun was about 3 years old.
I had never shot DA/SA gun before.

Mine have all been DA only. (Glock, KelTec, Kahr, etc.)
I was pleasantly surprised at how accurate it was on the first shot, with the long trigger pull.
Follow up shots were even more on the money.

Recoil was nil, even with Gold Dot +Ps.
I was in kind of a hurry, so I only shot about 60 rounds.
All Winchester "white box", except for one mag of Gold Dots.
No failures of any kind.

Running the target out to about 20 ft., I was able to keep all shots in a fist-sized group around the X.
Not bad for my first time with a new gun!
Comparing it to my Glock 19, I was surprised at how similar in size they were.
My nylon holsters for the G19, fit the P95 just fine.

When I turned in the gun, I had my dealer order me one.

:)

That model was used to win first place at the IDPA Nationals in the SSP/Marksman divison in 2000 and 2001.

You won't be sorry. It's not pretty, but mine is 100% reliable, and you sure don't hear complaints about them on the web. Preban hicaps are still available and cheap; all in all, it's an outstanding value in a combat handgun.

I shoot my friend's P95. It is ridiculously easy to shoot well with that gun. It matches my most accurate handgun, a Colt Trooper III, and has quicker follow-ups.

The only glitch he has is with a normal capacity mag he just bought. It always hangs up the last round. I've heard that the problem might go away after you exercise the spring awhile.

The P95 is a great gun. Bought mine two years ago and have yet to really find fault with it, other than getting bored with it's reliability and accuracy.

The P95 is far more accurate than I am. Great reliable gun. A lot of people complain about the trigger, me included but I won't give it up. I wish I was as accurate as it.

Glad you like it and have fun with it.

Glad to hear the kudos.

Good reports here on TFL and on GlockTalk (of all places) are what got me started looking at the P95.
I have heard that it is easier to find aftermarket hi-caps that work in the P95, than in some other guns.
I hope that is still the case.
I have a batch of stainless 15 rounders on the way from Sportsman's Guide.

As far as being ugly, well I had a Glock before, so it don't look too bad. ;)

When you consider the evolution from the original P-85 to the P95, it's quite a remarkable feat of engineer. Fewer parts and those remaining are multi-tasked. There are no compromises in durability from the original to the present and the design progressively improves. The only thing I don't like are those sterile Fineswine-Schumer-Kennedy-Metzembaum 10 round mags.

Glad to see this thread. I bought a P97 .45 (blue slide, I think they look better) last Dec. and I REALLY like it - f all the P95 comments stated above apply. My wife was shooting with me Sunday and she wanted to hog my H&K USP 9mm. Well, we can't have that, so I was thinking of picking up a P95 for her - most gun for the money and all that stuff. So again, I appreciate your helping me make the decision.

The P95 is a great gun and fun to shoot. For carry and defense, there are still a lot of Ruger Factory and Mec Gar pre-ban 15 rd mags in the $30-45 price range. If you can find them cheaper it's a bargain.

There are tons of pre-ban USA (Sportsman"s Guide}, ProMag, etc in 15, 20 and 30 rd. available - very cheap, but are not considered reliable enough for carry. But it enables you to practice with hi-caps at the range.

I recommend the Ruger P9 Carbine too - can use the same mags and it's a great little rifle.

it's a total piece of junk... when it arrives, package it up and send it to me, I'll take care of the problem for many years to come....

SERIOUSLY, a fine weapon... bit big and a tad clunky... but they feel good, shoot well, and will eat ANY round you care to shoot...

they are really good weapons... and come at a reasonable price too... Good shootin!

I also had a shocker when I reluctantly rented a Ruger P95DC at a range sometime ago. This gun was hitting the bullseye consistently. I actually carried one of the targets with me to show my friends and they could not believe I had used a Ruger.

After the range session where I fired 400 rounds, the gun was still going strong. It had no malfunctions and I could clearly see that it was dirty. Impressed with the gun I carefully studied it. Little slide play, smooth trigger, little recoil, large ejection port ( in fact, you can load a round directly into the chamber..like with the Beretta 92), the decocker moved the firing pin out of the way so the hammer fall is completely safe (some firearms use an intercept notch to stop the hammer fall whilst the firing pin remains in place),ergonomic grip etc. etc.

My two problems with it were that the sights are not as visible as I would like but that can be remedied easily and it is not as snag free as I would like for concealed carry.

For the money this gun is a giveaway.

I bought my p-95 back when they had the rebates. after the rebate my blue slide 95 cost $246 including tax.

Then I took it to the range where everyone sneered at Sleepy's cheap gun. They all want to shoot my 95 now but they have to get my 14 year old son's permission since he is now shooting bullseyes without any effort and has become rather protective over "his" Ruger. He still lets me shoot it but only when he wants to shoot my other guns.

Best gun deal I ever made and the trigger does break in over time

I looked hard at a P95 and P97 last year, while they were offering the $40 rebate.
Didn't buy.

Now, no rebate, and I think there was a small price increase at the first of the year.

The one I ordered was $349+tax+background.
Still a great value, but I wish I had saved $40.

I try to buy high, sell low.

My bride bought the P95 to learn to shoot and used it to score 223 out of 250 in her CHL testing. She started shooting in september 2001 and took the test in November. Not bad.

It's easy to shoot, accurate and the only jam I've seen was when my daughter limp-wristed it once.....one jam, in probably 1200 rounds.

A real pleasure to shoot.

My first Ruger auto was a new P95DC. I have shot it a lot and I usually use it for off-duty qual shoots. It is very accurate and I've never experienced an FTF or FTE with it. It feeds everything. It's so easy to shoot that it makes me look good.

I was so impressed with it that I then went out and bought a P97DC. Exactly the same story.

There are those who look down their noses at the Ruger autos, because they're not pretty, they're not expensive and they're a little on the large side. I'm not one of those folks. I love my Rugers. I think you'll be VERY pleased.

Bob
