Renewed friendship with an old 45 friend

10 years ago I bought my first polymer semi-automatic handgun, the original springfield XD in 45 acp. Since then I've purchased many other handguns and revolvers in all kinds of calibers, always looking for that one "true love" in terms of accuracy, ease of use and stopping power. Through all that time, my XD spent time as a secondary home-defense gun, almost never getting any range time. I believe the last time I fired it was probably 7 years ago! And in all that time I had three magazines left full of 230 gr defense loads.

Today I finally decided it was time to take her out and empty those magazines to see if they still could fire reliably. Although I've had to put red dots or scopes on all my other handguns due to deteriorating eyesight--my XD remains in original condition with just the stock irons on it.

I shot from a variety of distances from 15 to 50 yds--and the XD performed flawlessly--just as it always has. I even tried some of that high-velocity liberty stuff--controversial as it might be--it sure shoots nice and flat zipping along at 1900 fps. : ) 200 rounds later I went home with a smile, the XD is just flat-out one of the best combinations of reliability and good accuracy of any handgun I've ever had. It has NEVER once failed to fire any cartridge that I've put through it.

Funny how one can forget how good something is when chasing "the latest greatest" weapon. : )

Notice the muzzle-blast residue at the end of the day : )

If you look hard you can see the target in the distance if you follow a straight line up from the pistol grip and just below the dark rock wall in the bankground.

Nice. I've always like poly .45's and XD's in general. Got to shoot a 4" XD .40 and a 5" 9mm Tactical. Really nice shooting guns with soft recoil.

That's a nice experience. While I don't own an XD, I do have a few handguns now and that means I don't get to shoot them all, and tend to forget a few for a while. While I don't have any 'love' for my polymers, I have 4, and one on .45. I 'love' my blued-steel or stainless handguns, and really enjoy everything about them...no similar admiration for the plastic guns.

But, when it comes to getting the best hits on target and at the highest speed, the greatest carriability and fastest draw from the holster--it's my plastic .45.

The feeling that comes from that can't be beaten by anything at all, and you've reminded me to take that gun out more often (it happens to be an M&P...but that's not the point).

I have a Glock 19 Gen 2 that I feel the same way about, I have thousands of rounds through that gun and it is just a natural smooth shooter for me.

Glad you guys appreciate my little account--nuthin fancy--just back to basics. ; )

PS--forgot to mention--it was Sooooo nice how after each mag was emptied 13 spent cases were left in one nice concentrated pile no matter how I was shooting (I did a variety of standing, kneeling etc. stances). My glock and rugers tend to launch spent cases into low earth orbit when I fire higher-power cartridges

I have the Gen4 Glock 21 and the HK45. I really think that the large polymer-framed .45's are great shooting guns, and I'd urge anyone to try one out!

Not to bore everyone to tears with this thread--but upon examining my spent brass it's hard to not notice how exceptionally clean and residue free it is compared to, well, everything else I've fired. : ) Just ordered a bunch of different 45 bullets from Precision for reloading--they even have two sizes of remington gold sabers--now there's a bullet I haven't seen available in a LONG time. : )

Glad that you still like your XD after letting it sit for 7 years. I would like to get an XD45 one day. I do like .45ACP; I currently have 4 1911s and a S&W 1917. As for XDs, I have an XD40 Service Model and an XD9 Sub Compact, both are very accurate. An XD45 would fit in nicely.

Thanks for your posts, especially with the pictures.
