Removing the stock from an AK-47?

I have a Maddi (stamped reciever) AK and want to either take the stock off and refinish it or replace it with a synthetic stock.
How do you take the stock off? I took the screw out of the top of (behind the reciever) but it still wouldn't budge. Do I need to apply more pressure or is ther another screw holding it on?
Also what about the hand guards, how do I get them off?
Any info would be appreciated.

Need more info

Is it a thumbhole stock, or seperate pistol grip and buttstock? If it's a thumbhole version, there's a bolt that goes through the pistol grip and into the receiver. If it's a seperate buttstock, look for a lower tang behind the receiver, there will be another stock screw or two. If no tang, look inside the rear of the receiver and see if there's another stock screw going back into the stock from the back of the receiver. If all screws are out, you may need to give it a good whack with the heel of your hand, or a rubber mallet, to get the nose of the stock out of the receiver.
 
Did you get the screw under the spot where the recoil spring assembly slots into the receiver?

To remove the front lower handguard: field strip the rifle and remove upper handguard/gastube assembly. Under that, toward the front of the lower handguard is a small lever that must be turned through 180deg (point the end toward the muzzle) to remove the lower handguard. After turning the lever, pull the lower handguard toward the muzzle to remove it.

To remove the wood from the upper handguard/gastube: put the square end of the upper handguard/gastube assembly in a vise to prevent it from rotating, grab the wood portion and rotate your hand, the wood will slip right off the gastube.

All the wood removal can be a little difficult the first few times, but it will loosen up eventually.
 
As said above, two screws hold the buttstock on and another holds the P-grip in place. If it's a thumbhole, it may or may not (Romanian WUM-1's don't) have the p-grip screw.

Even with all of those screws removed, it can be very difficult to pull the buttstock out of the receiver. One Romanian AK I owned took 30 minutes and a lot of tugging to remove the buttstock while it's cousin took very little.
 
Yep, all good suggestions. When I fitted a polymer KVAR buttstock one time, the fit was extremely tight and if it looks like all the screws are out, then the stock is probably fit very tightly and will require some tugging and a wiggle or two.


RE: the wood on the gas tube... remember to use cloth or something similar to hold it in place as it is very easy to crush and scratch the metal. Good disassembly info is found on ak-47.net (if it's up).
 
Yep - Those Maadi stocks are really glued in there. 2 screws, each in the top. Field-strip the gun and you'll see the second screw. Wedge a flat-blade screw driver in the round hole inside the receiver and use it as leverage to pry the stock loose (Pushing back on the front of the stock). I didn't replace my Maadi's furniture, but I did strip, sand, and refinish it... It actually looks nice after the makeover.
