Removing Russian capture "dip "

Does anyone know of a professional that is able to correctly ( i.e. most effectively ) remove the Russian dip from a captured P38 ??

Any professional refinisher should be able to handle that, but it is part of the history of the gun...I would keep it (and I have on other pistols).

It's the gun's history. You'd be destroying the collector's value.

Get a cheap Walther P1 for a shooter. A lot more durable (with the hex nut and thicker slide version) and they're relatively common and quite available at good prices.

Maybe. But probably not.

I think it would be very surprising if refinishing these guns (which have already been given an arsenal refinish) would decrease it's value. If done properly, and the gun has good markings, a refinish might even IMPROVE the gun's resale price -- but not for a collector who knew his stuff. Why? There are just too many properly marked, good condition, and well-maintained WWII guns for serious collectors to worry about arsenal-refinished guns.

A lot of these weapons were, so to speak, "rode hard and put away wet." The two captured Lugers I owned shot great -- one was a real tack-driver -- but both had badly corroded barrels. A lot of the captured guns ended up being used by East German police for a number of years. As for collector value -- it would be hard to determine any sort of history (provenance) for these guns. Then, too, 9x19 was never used by the militaries of Warsaw Pact countries.

The P-38s I've shot (I owned one that was pristine) weren't really all that great as shooters -- I much preferred the Lugers.

It likely has a "X" marked on the slide and import markings. All part of the guns history. I am part of the leave it as is camp. If you want a bring back gun there are plenty of those to be had.

The Bulgarian contract guns for the most part are poorly assembled of mixed parts have that crappy dip finish on top of being overly buffed and fail to function properly. Collectors? Only those that escaped the rebuild.
