removing grenade launcher?

I have a yugo model59/66 SKS, and was wondering if anyone has tried to remove the grenade launcher? The barrel is a bit heavy, and I would like to clean it up if it won't hurt the accuracy/ performance. Any ideas?

There is a pin in the barrel holding the launcher. I don't know if it is welded in place or not. Good question.

Frag - I think CDNN performs this operation, as I recall, for all the Yugo SKS's shipped to CA. I believe all those originally imported have the grenade launcher attached, and if the seller wants to ship to CA, the grenade launcher must be removed to conform to CA AW law requirements. You might give them a call and ask 'em how they do it?

There is a good article with photos at www.surplusrifle.com going through the whole operation. It looks like more than an hour at the kitchen table.

The cross pin that holds the grenade launcher in place is pretty obvious. It is on the under side of the GL about 5/8 inch from the back and is not welded over but is a tight fit. A couple whacks with a good punch and hammer should drive it out. The barrel is tapered towards the muzzle, so driving the GL off the barrel with a block of wood and hammer isn't hard either.
