I just bought an old SKS that had been liberely coated with cosmoline.
The guy I bought it from removed a good deal of it, but I want to paint it camo, and I need to get the rest of the cosmoline off the stock. What works best to remove cosmoline?
Paint thinner? Acetone? What?????

Hot soapy water works well. When all the cosmoline is off, clean and oil like mnormal but ensure all water is gone.

To get the cosmoline out of the stock, stick it in your oven for 20 minutes at 250 degrees. Clean it and repeat.

Gasoline will also work.

CAUTION: Use any solvent, including gasoline, in a well-ventilated area, and avoid breathing fumes. Also keep flammable solvents away from flames or fire. And No Smoking!

US Army trick. Remove all wood. Go to chow hall where your buddies are doing KP. Steamclean. Oil. Reassemble.
