I would like to pick up a full size 1911 gun to work on. It can be blue or parkerized or stainless. I would love to build from a series 70 colt , but they are pricey. Could I purchase a 1991 A1 colt and remove the series 80 safety stuff??? or would I be better with a milspec springfield or loaded springfield loaded but basic gun. I want a flat backstrap , triggerjob with 4 lb trigger , combat sites fixed ( no night sites) I want the gun accurate enough for combat work ( 4 inches at 25 yards or better ) I want the lowered ejection port and a tuned extractor . I will buy smooth wood grips that are narrow . It does not matter if it has cocking serrations or not... My latest springfield is really sharp in the edges though. I am planning on learning a bit about 1911 assembly and disassembly with this gun... although I am not a skilled gunsmith,,, I want to understand how to get it apart and back together. I won't be grinding or cutting anything... maybe just replacing mim or average quality parts.

Call 1-800-955-4856 (Wilson Combat) and order the "1911 Auto Maintenace Manual" for $10.50 + shipping. This booklet has detailed info on dis-assaembly, re-assembly, maintenance, inspection and care of the 1911, accompanied by color photos in abundance. This will give you all you need to know to really understand your 1911, without detailed gunsmithing info.

In this litigious society, removing safety devices from your pistol is foolish. I consider it foolish anyway, regardless of legal issues.

Good luck and enjoy your 1911.
