Hi all any tips or advise on how to get rid of the rust on the crown of a rifle bbl?

Also, what have you been using on surface rust? Oil and 0000 steel wool? Anyother tips on this.

Thanks so much!!!

Exactly where is the rust and how severe is it ? If it's at the inner edge you should consider recrowning the barrel !!

I don't like using steel wool on guns.

My old method is to soak the rusty area with a good penetrating fluid like Kroil or CLP Breakfree for 1 or 2 days. This softens and loosens the rust.

Then apply more fluid and liberally scrub the rusty area with a brass "toothbrush".
This won't harm the bluing.
Once the rust is off, wipe clean and keep a thin coat of CLP Breakfree on the gun to prevent further rust and to continue "working" on any remaining rust.

Gunzilla is another product that clears rust. I left some in a pitted barrel for about 6 week once and found that sometime during that period the rust had all fallen to the bottom of the bore and just patched out. Borescope showed no trace remaining. Odd stuff. Doesn't dry easily, which is why that long exposure worked.

I don't know if a crown kept wet with Kroil or PB Blaster for that long would do the same thing or not? Might be worth a try. Put a little in a cup and set the gun upside down in a corner with the muzzle in the cup.
