Remove cylinder from 442 J-Frame Revolver

I saw another message that said someone was removing the cylinder from their revolver to clean it.

How is this done? I thought about it in the past but couldn't figure it out.

Thank you!

On the side of the revolver opposite the side that the cylinder swings out, just above the trigger is a screw. By removing that screw, you can slide the cylinder and crane out the front of the revolver. You can then clean the cylinder out as well as cleaning the forcing cone and top-strap MUCH better. Two cautions. Use ONLY a screw driver that fits precisely into the slot on the screw head. Otherwise you'll mess up the screw and they can be hard to replace. Secondly, don't lose the screw for the same reason. Be careful not to force or bend the crane when you are reassembling the revolver. Just take your time and you'll learn to do it pretty quick and easy. You don't have to take it off every time you clean the gun, but you can clean it better if you do. Good luck.

Why remove it? I have been using a 442 for about 5 yrs now (about 700 rds through it) and find no need.

The only valid reason to do so would be if the cylinder no longer spins freely when swung out, indicating that there is a buildup of fouling on the crane axis. As an armorer I used to do that at extended intervals with guns that had fired a LOT of rounds.

You probably got some sort of 'cleaning and maintenance offer' from S&W when you bought the gun. If it gums up either send it in or give it to a certified armorer. Not a big deal but best done properly.
