Remington's failed R51

I came across this release from Remington, it is an old memo, talking bout the problems with the commercial untis and their goal to remedy them, they also offered owners of the 1st gen to send in for a new updated pistol.

question is, have these pistols been re-introduced? is there any new info on the performance if so? I really wanna like it, and buy one. Do any of you guys own one?

I think it speaks pretty highly that they admitted their mistake and have offered to remedy it

As opposed to what? Allowing a potentially unsafe product to exist in the marketplace and open themselves to potential litigation? They did what any lawyer would recommend and to my knowledge the revised pistols are still vaporware.

I wouldn't be surprised if in some cases companies will do a cost comparison whereby if possible litigation is estimated to be cheaper than the recall, they may well forego the recall.

If this is truly a remake of an old design, I can see where the Russians got the idea for the SKS. The action lock up looks to be the same.

I wasn't aware that the gun was potentially dangerous, I just thought it had terrible reliability issues

There were some cases of it firing when not fully in battery, though the lockup design should prevent that from being catastrophic. Nevertheless, a gun marketed for self defense that had terrible reliability issues? Sounds unsafe to me.

As long as they fix the issue, 2 mags + case seems like a good PR move to compensate folks for the hassle.

Rumor I saw somewhere else was the new R51 was dealayed into 2015.

There was an article recently of Remington treating a bunch of Special Forces wives to range training day, which concluded with them being given an R51. Presumably they wouldn't be giving away the same guns being recalled, so that means either they got the initial "perfect" pre-production samples still on hand, or brand new version 2.0 pre-production samples.

Then again, it would not surprise me if Remington straight up gave a bunch of defective merchandise slated for destruction to the spouses of our best and bravest for a publicity stunt. It'd be about par for the course, actually :p

I have to say, this anticipation and info blackout is killing me. Between waiting on the R51 to do...something, and Dodge to finally start shipping B5 blue 2015 Challengers, I'm practically a nervous wreck :(

"It is pretty cool how they will give two free magazines and a free pelican case!"

It's a gesture, not a nice one, but a gesture, nonetheless. Personally, and probably speaking for the R51 buyers at large, I'd have appreciated a holster, or belt, or Crimson Trace laser sight, or night sights, ammo, or even two more magazines far more than a comically oversized hardcase for a carry pistol.

Actually, a bunch of free ammo would have been the best compensation, since we will obviously need to both prove and train with these guns --which again, we all bought for the purpose of carrying to defend our lives with. You need ammo and lots of it to do that effectively, especially when our faith has been severely shaken.

Not really a fan of holsters that manufacturers ship with their guns as a promotion, as they are usually of the cheap design... Ammo on the other hand would be great.

be that as it may, I have so far found those holsters to be quite utilitarian. the ones that came with my XDMs are used every time I go hunting, the one that came with my canik would likely have as well except for the fact that the gun is now on it's way back to the factory, apparently the holster was more reliable than the gun that fits in it. would I love it if they came with an IWB hybrid holster? heck yes, would I expect the company to throw one in the box for free? heck no.

be that as it may, I have to agree, a pelican case is a nice, expensive thing to have, but pretty pointless for a gun that's being marketed almost solely as a concealed piece... I'd rather have some extra mags if I had bought one.

I'm betting that they'll just write it off as unrepairable catastrophic design flaw and refund everyone instead of getting the gun back in production... mainly because it's pretty hard to win trust back after launching a failed product on the consumers.

...then again my Remshmaster ACR was recalled and I still like it a lot.

You mean like Chevrolet's ignition switch issue?

Or the Takata airbags (which they apparently knew were a problem about 8 years ago).

I was referring to the Galco and Crimson Trace products designed specifically for the R51, which I'm sure are selling like hotcakes ;)

I posted about how terrible the R51 was when we got our first one in at the shop and everyone except a few complained that I was bias and wrong, and that it's an amazing gun. Personally I think Remington has been going downhill in quality for a long time now.... sad... but true.

I am glad they admitted their fault.. and I would love to see them bounce back with better QC and cut less corners.... however the R51 after handling it..... was an absolute awkward flop of a handgun design. It is not SMALL, the grip is wide from front to backstrap... the trigger litterally feels identical to a hi-point. The action felt like it had strips of sand paper on the rails.

I guess we will see.

Everytime I hold an ACR... I want to like it... but the trigger is bad.. the barrel isn't chrome lined... the production support for the spare barrels is not there.....and the price tag despite what it lacks is way too high.... makes me sad.:(
